Ngati Whatua of Orakei furthermore excluded any such claims from other members of their own whanau Roroa of the Kaipara harbour immediately to the north, of which tribe White considered Orakei to be a hapu.
Ngati Whatua of Orakei's exclusive claims and pretensions to an independent status of their own probably reflected their exploitation of the government's acceptance of their offer in 1843 to move to the area, its benefit from the commercial growth of the city of Auckland, rising land values, and its subsequent land sales.
In 1867 all Ngati Whatua of Orakei's exclusive claims were to be confirmed by Judge Fenton in the Native Land Court, perhaps not surprisingly given this particular history of reciprocal patronage.
