Ngauruhoe is a beautifully shaped volcano on the edge of the Tongariro massif.
Ngauruhoe is new Zealand's most active volcano with 61 eruptions since 1839.
The most recent eruption at Ngauruhoe was in February of 1977.

The sun was just starting to rise over the slopes of Ngauruhoe to the east, and I hurried outside to take some pictures.
A side trail went up Mt. Ngauruhoe, and a sign said it was a two hour climb.
This was not nearly as high as Ngauruhoe, and there didn't seem to be much point of going out there in the rain.

Ngauruhoe Crater is at the top of Mt. Ngauruhoe, a steep climb above the Tongariro Crossing portion of the Tongariro Circuit, which makes a big loop around this conical volcano.
The crater still emits volcanic gasses, so climbing into it is not recommended, although some people do.
The gas vents are quite warm to the touch.

Each year, only a few earthquakes of any type are recorded in the vicinity of Mt. Ngauruhoe, but since the beginning of May the number of low frequency earthquakes recorded has increased from less than five per day, to more than twenty per day in the past week.
In 1983, 1991 and 1994 there were clusters of similar earthquakes recorded near Ngauruhoe, but there have been very few recorded since then.
The transition in the crust between cool brittle rock and hot ductile rock is thought to occur around this depth.

In an Alert Bulletin issued on November 1st, Steven Sherburn, Duty Volcanologist at GNS Science announced that the earthquakes, which are occurring at a depth of about 1 km on the volcano’s northern flank, have continued.
The activity, which is described as “significantly above that normally recorded at Ngauruhoe” has peaked at rates of 30 earthquakes per day on occasion.
Measurements of temperature and volcanic gases at the volcano remain normal, and are similar to 2003 readings.

Leaving the road the trail follows alongside a meandering stream through alpine scrub and across old lava flows to a wide, flat amphitheatre at the head of the valley.
