 Nguyen Viet Thanh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
General Nguyen Viet Thanh was born in 1931, Dalat, Vietnam.
General Thanh served in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) and was assigned as Commander of IV Corps, 7th Division.
In May 1970, General Thanh was tasked to lead unit IV Corp into Cambodia to support General Do Cao Tri, but his plane collided with a U.S. Cobra in the interior of Cambodia and he was killed.

One ARVN general, Nguyen Van Hieu, was born in China, where his father was an official of the French Surete in Shanghai, and later in Hanoi.
Hieu was young, enthusiastic, capable and honest, and the news media speculated that his death was the work of the corrupt generals.
Hieu rose through the ranks to chief of staff, II Corps/Tactical Zone 2 (1964); commander of the 22nd Infantry Division (1964 and 1966); and commander of the 5th Infantry Division (1970).

General Tran Van Minh (Trần Văn Minh) was born on August 19, 1923 in Saigon, Vietnam.
He was sometimes known as Little Minh to distinguish him from the huge Duong Van Minh.
In 1953, he served on the Chief of Staff until 1955, reassigned as Military Zone Commander until 1957.

Steersman Nguyen Van Hai and sailors Tran Cong Lang and Tran Ngo Phi Hung were rescued by a Malaysian fishing boat on June 24, and are still in Malaysia.
Nguyen Van Hoang, steersman of fishing boat TG 9055, also owned by Huynh Van Minh, said he had spoken to the sunken boat’s crew by telephone on the evening of June 22 when the two boats were about 30 nautical miles apart.

Nguyen Thi Binh (1927-), Chief representative of the NLF at the Paris talks in 1968, Foreign Minister of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of South Vietnam (PRG) from its foundation in June 1969.
She became Minister of Education in 1976, was elected Vice President of the SRV in the early 1990s, and reelected in 1997.

The majestic aura that soldiers perceived in General Hieu's personality came from his inner strength, not from an artificial majesty requiring the use of a general's baton, or a combat camouflaged outfit, or a cigar, or an imposing guard detail, etc...
My own suspicion is that General Hieu was not assassinated by his fellow officers but murdered by the NVA prior the final offensive in 3 Corps.
General Hieu as an unsung hero, in times that heroes were scarce I would encourage everyone to pick up a copy of this book and read it.

Nguyen Van Tin, who came to the United States as a refugee at the end of the Vietnam War, has a web site depicting the Do Xa mission of April 27, 1964 from the Vietnamese point of view.
Nguyen Van Tin was the younger brother of Colonel Nguyen Van Hieu who, as the Chief of Staff for the ARVN II Corps area, designed the plan for the Do Xa raid.
Nguyen Van Tin currently lives in the Bronx area of New York City and is a counselor in the public high school system.

Major General Nguyen Van Hieu was appointed commander of the ARVN 5th Infantry Division in August 1969, just three month before the implementation of the Vietnamization announced by President Nixon.
For his part, General Hieu was opposed to moving his headquarters from Phu Cuong, where he only needed some units of the local Popular Force to secure its defense, while at Lai Khe, he had to commit, and in doing so, bog down a full battalion of his regular forces.
On a larger scale, the ARVN as a whole was faced with the same dire predicament as General Hieu: to replace seven American divisions and four American brigades along with their numerous supporting units, without the benefit of any increase in troops.

He was born in the South, received higher education in Hanoi, and after graduation, was sent to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to work for the French government [3].
In 1940, upon an invitation by a group of lay Buddhists led by Mr Nguyen Van Hieu, a close friend, he went back to Vietnam and helped to establish the first Theravada temple for Vietnamese Buddhists, at Go Dua, Thu Duc (now a district of Saigon).
In 1957, the Vietnamese Theravada Buddhist Sangha Congregation (Giao Hoi Tang Gia Nguyen Thuy Viet Nam) was formally established and recognised by the government, and the Theravada Sangha elected Venerable Ho-Tong as its first President, or Sangharaja.
