This photograph shows the police chief General Nguyen Ngoc Loan in the process of executing a Vietcong prisoner, Nguyen Van Lem; Lem is yet to be shot at.
In addition to that, an interesting fact about the Viet Cong photograph is that according to the photographer Eddie Adams, the victim, Lem, had just murdered “a South Vietnamese colonel, his wife and their six children” and therefore, the General’s act of executing Lem was justifiable (Riper, 2000).
In figure 1, the studium is that Lem is under the threat of being shot but the punctum is that he is going to die, which is a disturbing thought.

More subtly and insidious, though, was the media's intrusion into one of the most famous images of the war, the extemoraneous execution of Nguyen Van Lem by a South Vietnamese general, Nguyen Ngoc Loan (no relation).
When the media reminds you of the benefits of the major media's layers of gatekeeping and their monastic commitment to telling the truth, it's worthwhile to remember the story of the shooting.
Of all the media that covered the story, only the Associated Press mentioned that Lem was the leader of a Viet Cong assassination unit that had just murdered 34 civilians - including women and children - that had been found in a nearby ditch.

At the same time the rules of engagement were very flexible in what were called free fire zones -- things that you and I might consider atrocities were conducted according to the laws of war.
Clearly, for instance, the execution of Nguyen Van Lem had elements of a lawful battlefield execution of a combatant eschewing Geneva Convention rules of warfare, making him a spy subject to martial law, while it was at the same time an atrocity by humane standards that properly galvanized opposition to the war.
