  Lead-Acid or NiCd Batteries?
Overall, NiCd batteries are at least as inexpensive, and probably actually somewhat less expensive a source of power than SLA batteries if you are using them frequently, over the course of their total life.
NiCd batteries are, overall, about 30% lighter for a given amount of power capacity than SLA batteries.
NiCd batteries lose about 1% of their charge per day when sitting on the shelf, due to internal "self-discharge".

The only effect that the current charge level has on the next charging cycle is that it's much easier to overcharge a NiCd cell whose current charge state is unknown, than it is to overcharge one which is known to be flat.
NiCd batteries are the staple power source of the RC model industry.
NiCd can be charged very quickly, they have decent power density, AND, most important of all, they have VERY low internal resistance.
