 Introduction to NiMH Battery Technology
The NiMH battery is termed an alkaline storage battery due to the use of potassium hydroxide (KOH) as the electrolyte.
NiMH batteries can be fabricated in virtually any size from tens of milliampere hours to hundreds of ampere hours or more.
The active material for the negative electrode in the NiMH battery is actually hydrogen, the same as it is in a nickel hydrogen battery, except that the hydrogen ions (protons) are stored in the metal hydride structure which also serves as the electrode.

Frequently Asked Questions about NiMH Battery Chargers, AA and AAA
NiMH smart chargers have actually been designed to detect when a NiMH battery is fully charged and then shut off or go into a trickle charge mode.
If the NiMH batteries get too hot to handle and stay that way for more than 20 or 30 minutes, then the NiCd charger is most likely overcharging the NiMH batteries and may shorten their life.
However, reconditioning is very convenient for both NiMH and NiCD batteries because brand new batteries are not charged when you receive them and they must be charged and discharged three to five times before they reach their full capacity.

“NiMH batteries were mere laboratory curiosities before the development of advanced metal hydride electrodes that were capable of being charged and discharged in a cell environment without failure,” he explained.

The Palm Tree - NIMH Batteries
NiMH's work great in the Pilot and can save you from constantly buying more batteries...
Appearantly, if one NiMH is stronger than the other, they sort of trade power when using or charging them, which can decrease their useful life.
Don't worry, the Pilot works with voltage all the way down to 2.0 volts so a fully-charged pair of NiMH's will run the Pilot for quite a while, but you will never see the battery gauge at 100% (3.0 volts).

The KA7OEI FT-817 page - About NiCd and NiMH rechargable batteries
This market penetration is due not only to the higher capacity of the NiMH cells, but the fact that there is a preference toward the use of NiMH cells as they are far less hazardous in their disposal than NiCds, which contain the toxic, heavy metal Cadmium.
In the case of NiMH cells (where the self-discharge rate is rather high - especially as the cell ages) it may be desirous to leave it on a "maintenance" (or "trickle") charge for very long periods of time.
NiMH cells will do this, but the magnitude of this voltage rise is only a fraction of that of NiCd cells and, under many charge conditions, may go completely unnoticed, hence the need to monitor the temperature of NiMH cells as well as to limit the amount of time over which a charge is applied.

NIMH Reorganization Creates Uncertain Future for Basic Behavioral Science
For example, areas that were traditionally funded by the basic science division, such as much social and personality psychology, are being moved into the new translational research or AIDS and Health and Behavior divisions, with an increased requirement to re-focus work on the research’s application to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for mental disorders.
To ensure that there is sufficient expertise within the new divisions, NIMH is seeking to recruit several new program officers in areas relevant to translation, including basic behavioral science.
As the rules for NIMH funding change, it becomes especially important to review the new documents and also to contact the program officers who are listed as contacts within the research branch where your research may be funded (see: http://www.nimh.nih.gov/researchfunding/reorganization.cfm).

How to charge Nickel Metal Hydride Batteries.
If a temperature monitor is used NiMH batteries can be charged at rates up to 1C (in other words 100% of the battery capacity in amp-hours for 1.5 hours).
This can be done safely at a current of between 0.03 C and.05 C. The voltage required for this is dependent on temperature, so be sure to regulate the current in the charger.
With the NiMH battery the voltage depression is smaller, and harder to detect than with the NiCad battery.
