nian hao   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Han Wudi was conventionally regarded as the first emperor to declare a nian hao; however he was only the first to use a nian hao in every year of his reign.
In addition, using a particular nian hao was a political act implying recognition of a sovereign's right to rule, and one issue that traditional Chinese historians faced was which set of nian hao to use when dating a historical event.
Nian hao were also employed (under different naming convention) in other East Asian countries such as Korea, Japan and Vietnam, mostly because of China's cultural influence.

Chinese era name : Nian Hao
A Chinese era name, commonly referred to in Chinese as Nian Hao 年號 (pinyin nian2 hao4), is the "era name" commonly used when numbering years in an emperor's reign and naming certain Chinese rulers.
The process of nian hao declaration was referred to in traditonal Chinese history texts as Jianyuan (建元 jian4 yuan2).
Declaring a new nian hao to replace an old one during an emperor's reign was referred to as gai yuan (改元 gai3 yuan2), literally meaning "changing the nian hao".

Min Guo (民國 in pinyin: mín gúo, literal meaning: "The Country of the People"), or the Republic, is the Chinese era name (年號;, pinyin: Nian Hao) of the Republic of China (ROC), which followed the Qing Dynasty in China.
Schools on the mainland inncorrectly teach that the Republic of China no longer exists and that Chiang Kai-shek declared a new republic upon relocating the government to Taiwan.
Following the imperial tradition of using the sovereign's nian hao and year of reign, many official documents on Taiwan still use the Min Guo system of numbering years in which year one was 1912, the date of the founding of the Republic of China.

 Culture and History
Beginning in the Han dynasty, emperors began to adopt nian hao 年號 or “era names” (sometimes also referred to as “reign names”) carrying auspicious meanings.
Thus it was this legacy, in all its different aspects, that Sun Yat-sen and his fellow revolutionaries wanted to eliminate by establishing a new calendar.
Because of their applications in agriculture, commerce, local government and so on, almanacs and other popular devices for the reckoning of time tended to find as much, if not more, use in cyclical time measurements than in nian hao.

The Spring Festival is also called "Nian", but who knows the term, Nian, was once the name of a furious monster that lived on human beings in the ancient time.
The moment it opened its mouth at people, burst out the frightening noises and fire made by people, and wherever the monster went, it was forced to back off by the terrible noises.
People often say Guo Nian, which means 'live the festival.' Furthermore, Nian also means the year.

 Chinese calendar
During the Imperial period, the Nian Hao (Era name of an emperor) was placed in front of the year name for distinction.
Using a particular emperor's nian hao was implicit recognition of the legitimacy of that emperor which could be very politically significant in cases of disputed succession or revolt.
In addition, it also made it difficult for Chinese historians to avoid taking sides over which dynasty was more legitimate in talking about earlier periods in which China was divided.

But Nian now refers to “year,” changing the greeting’s meaning to “It’s very good to have the old year go.” Others say, “Have a merry noche buena,” referring to the sumptuous family meal and firecrackers of New Year’s Eve, reminiscent of the triumph over the evil spirit of millennia past.
In addition, they may add a hearty “Kong hee hat chay” or “Kong ho sun hee,” which means “May your life be prosperous.” Children greet their grandparents in expectation of aguinaldos, usually money put in red envelopes called hungpao.

For two weeks leading up to New Year’s Day, Chinatown is a sea of red decorations, and the smells of tasty treats like nian gao, a sticky sweet rice pudding, and steamed dumplings called jiaozi waft through the air.
This boisterous celebratory style stems from the story of a horrible beast called "Nian" (also meaning "year") that supposedly devoured villagers after nightfall.
