NICCOLITE, a mineral consisting of nickel arsenide, NiAs, containing 43.9% nickel and 56.1% arsenic.
Niccolite occurs with ores of cobalt, silver and copper at Annaberg and Schneeberg in Saxony, at Sangerhausen and Mansfeld in Prussian Saxony and other localities; it has occasionally been found in Cornwall and Scotland.
The original arite (aarite) is from Mount Ar (Aar) near Pic du Midi d'Ossau in the Pyrenees.

Its association with niccolite and maucherite is hypogene and it is probably also hypogene in the millerite ore. Millerite is usually supergene (4) but the possibility of hypogene origin has been recognized (2), and pentlandite may be supergene at times although no entirely satisfactory evidence has been presented for this belief (5).
The ore consists of the nickel minerals polydymite, pentlandite, millerite, niccolite, bravoite, and violarite associated with cobaltite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalco pyrite, sphalerite, arsenopyrite, and quartz.
The association and occurrence of native gold in niccolite and in hypogene millerite, the presence of hypogene millerite, and the graphic intergrowth of gold and gersdorffite are believed to differ from any other described occurrences.

 Niccolite
Niccolite, in rough pyramidal crystals and granular aggregates, was found in the mass of nickel-cobalt ores cut by the Trotter shaft added depth of 340 feet.
Where in contact with calcite or fluorite some of the niccolite is in rude crystals.
Koenig (137), who first noted its occurrence, received specimens in which were mere traces of niccolite; the larger masses of it were found later.

Niccolite is a nickel arsenic ore, is a mineral, classified by Dana's Manual of Mineralogy, and is a minor source of nickel (Ni).
Niccolite's color ranges from a gray to a copper color.
The specific gravity of this mineral ranges from 7.3 to 7.7, and it may contain small quantities of iron, cobalt or sulphur.

It was first isolated in an impure condition in 1751 by A. Cronstedt from niccolite, and his results were afterwards confirmed by T. Bergman in 1775 (De niccolo, opusc.
231; 3, P. It occurs in the uncombined condition and alloyed with iron in meteorites; as sulphide in millerite and nickel blende, as arsenide in niccolite and cloanthite, and frequently in combination with arsenic and antimony in the form of complex sulphides.
In recent years it has been found in considerable quantities in New Caledonia in the form of a hydrated silicate of nickel and magnesia approximating to the constitution (NiO, MgO) SiO 2.

Properties of As and S at NiAs, NiS, and Fe (sub 1-x) S surfaces, and reactivity of niccolite in air and water -- ...
Niccolite (NiAs), NiS (high temperature form), and pyrrhotite (Fe (sub 1-S)) are structurally related, with sulfur and arsenic sixfold coordinated.
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) study of niccolite (NiAs) surfaces fractured under high vacuum (10 (super -9) torr) indicate that arsenic is more reactive than Ni toward residual gases of the XPS analytical chamber, as evident from development of small As (super 1+) and As (super 3+) photopeaks in the As(3d) XPS spectrum.
The accumulation of arsenite and arsenate salts at the niccolite surface distinguishes it from millerite and pyrrhotite surfaces reacted with aerated solutions.

Pinkish niccolite usually separates the rammelsbergite from α-domeykite and occurs as thin zones to fairly large masses intimately mixed with rammelsbergite and α-domeykite.
A sample consisting of the disequilibrium assemblage pararammelsbergite, niccolite, and α-domeykite was finely ground and heated in a sealed silica tube for seven days at 510±5°C in an attempt to determine the upper limit on the pararammelsbergite inversion temperature.
Another observation which militates against this objection is the observed rim of niccolite between the rammelsbergite and α-domeykite; this rim is usually very thin, indicative of only limited reaction between rammelsbergite and the α-domeykite precipitating fluids.

 Nickel
It occurs combined with sulfur in millerite, with arsenic in the mineral niccolite, and with arsenic and sulfur in nickel glance.
On account of its permanence in air and inertness to oxidation, it is used in the smaller coins, for plating iron, brass, etc., for chemical apparatus, and in certain alloys, as German silver.
In 1751, Baron Axel Frederik Cronstedt was attempting to extract copper from kupfernickel (now called niccolite), and obtained instead a white metal that he called nickel.

Niccolite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When nickel sulphide ore deposits have been altered to produce niccolite, often the presence of arsenic renders the ore uneconomic when concentrations of As reach several hundred parts per million.
However, arsenic bearing nickel ore may be treated by blending with 'clean' ore sources, to produce a blended feedstock which the mill and smelter can handle with acceptable recovery.
Within the smelter itself, the niccolite contributes to high arsenic contents which require additional reagents and fluxes to strip from the nickel metal.

The nickel occurs in the form of niccolite (NiAs) and is generally found in lenses and pods, which are believed to be structurally controlled.
One feature of niccolite is its high specific gravity of 7.8, which provided a foundation for the Company and its geologists to conduct this gravity survey to identify possible niccolite bodies in the area.
It dips at a shallow angle (equals 18 degrees) to the west and approaches to within 20 metres of the surface.

The Mavens' Word of the Day
The word is borrowed from Swedish, where it is a clipping of kopparnickel, from German Kupfernickel, the word for niccolite, the copper-colored metallic mineral nickel arsenide.
Kupfernickel is from Kupfer 'copper' and Nickel 'demon, devil', which as we've seen is a nickname of Nicholas.
The mineral niccolite is literally called "copper demon" because while it looks like copper (which is relatively valuable) it yields none.

Nickel is one of the transition elements of the periodic table.
Nickel was used as coinage in nickel-copper alloys for several thousand years, but was not recognized as an elemental substance until 1751 when the Swedish chemist Baron Axel Frederic Cronstedt isolated the metal from niccolite ore.
Combined with other elements, it occurs in minerals such as garnierite, millerite, niccolite, pentlandite, and pyrrhotite; the latter two minerals are the principal ores of nickel.
