Jommelli was born to Francesco Antonio Jommelli and Margarita Cristiano in Aversa, a small town some 20 kilometres north of Naples.
The appointment of Jommelli, recommended by Hasse, as maestro di cappella to the Ospedale degl’ Incurabili in Venice is not definitively documented.
Jommelli wrote cantatas, oratorios and other sacred works, but by far the most important part of his output were his operas, particularly his opere serie of which he composed around sixty examples, several with libretti by Metastasio.

A mixture of styles, not unusual for the period, is evident in Jommelli's Requiem in E (1756).
Jommelli, in his requiem of 1756, set the full sequence in a large quadripartite form within a generally dramatic, florid and sometimes lyric style.
In some cases, single texts, usually the sequence and the responsory, were set separately, either as independent motets or as a means of providing vivid contrast within chanted forms of the funeral service.

This one is very successful, and starts with the surprise of removing the CD box from its outer sleeve; the CD box cover is entirely fl, with a large pendant jewel depicted in the middle with the name of the work forming a curve of small white letters beneath it.
Niccolò Jommelli is a composer whose significance in his own time has strangely not endured.
This is the second feature of Jommelli’s writing that comes across as reason for surprise at his neglect.

 Niccolò Jommelli, composer, biography, discography
Niccolò Jommelli, who was admired by his peers, inspiring the most polemical writers—Diderot, as will be seen later—but since forgotten in historians’ memories, came to life again in 1830 under the pen of Honoré de Balzac.
For the latter, merely the name of Jommelli, like a bewitching incantation, sufficed to evoke the magic and fascination of opera.
In the Balzac novel which chose Enlightenment Rome as its frame, Jommelli ideally satisfied the demands of truth.

 Spotlight on Craig Lister
Its editions often show important performing traditions from the past, such as the Ensemble's recreation of an "Old Folk's" concert in 1996 (and accompanying score, Ye Greate Concerte).
The purpose of these editions is to showcase valuable music that has, up to now, suffered in silence.
In the case of Jommelli's Celebrated Overture the edition also solves a long-standing mystery -- the underlying thematic source for the overture.
