Ecological niche - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In ecology, a niche is a term describing the relational position of a species or population in an ecosystem.
The term 'Niche' was coined by the naturalist Joseph Grinnell in 1917, in his paper "The niche relationships of the California Thrasher."
For example, the niche that was left vacant by the extinction of the tarpan has been filled by other animals (in particular a small horse breed, the konik).

 Niche
Expanding from its primary sense as an architectural recess, a niche is a small concavity or an enclosure that is set back (e.g., indented).
In ecology, a niche would be the position occupied by an organism (or group of organisms) within an ecosystem or the conditions making possible a habitat.
A niche can also be a situation or an activity perfectly suited to a person.

The mission of NICHE is to import principles and tools to stimulate a change in the culture of healthcare facilities to achieve patient-centered care for older adults.
NICHE is unlike other programs in that it does not prescribe how institutions should modify geriatric care; rather, it provides the materials and services necessary to stimulate and support the planning and implementation process.
The focus of NICHE is on programs and protocols that are dominantly under the control of nursing practice; in other words, areas where nursing interventions have a substantive and positive impact on patient care.

The ecological niche is not a notion of quantitative population ecology despite of several attempts to define it quantitatively.
Elton (1927) described the niche as the function performed by the species in the community of which it is a member.
However, this kind of statements should be accepted with caution because: (1) measurement of niche volume is a subjective procedure, (2) some important dimensions of the niche may be not known, (3) niches change in the life-cycle, (4) niches change from one geographical region to another.

 Ecological Niche
The concept of the ecological niche is an important one; it helps us to understand how organisms in an ecosystem interact with each other.
By analogy, it may be said that the habitat is the organism's "address", and the niche is its "profession", biologically speaking.
If the oak trees were cut down or destroyed by fire or storms they would no longer be doing their job and this would have a disastrous effect on all the other organisms living in the same habitat.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Niche
The convenience, propriety and beauty of the arrangement were immediately apparent, however, and thenceforward the development of the niche as an independent architectural form was constant and rapid.
Not only did the canopied niche assimilate the statue in the architectural entity and afford it that protection from the weather so necessary in the north; it also, in conjunction with the statue itself, produced one of the richest compositions of line, light, and shade known to art.
The medieval architects realized this and seized upon it with avidity, using it almost as their chief means for obtaining those spots and spaces of rich decoration that gave the final touch of perfection to their marvellous fabrics.

Realized niche will almost always be a subset of ("smaller than") the fundamental niche, for various reasons; one important determinant of realized niche is presence or absence of different competitors
Of course, 100% niche overlap is unlikely if not impossible; but such an extreme case is not necessary for competitive exclusion or other forms of niche change
Both possible responses to niche competition (competitive exclusion, and coexistence via reduction in niche overlap) are commonly observed, and their determinants and features have been studied by three means: lab experiments, field observations, and mathematical models or simulations
