Topic: Nichi Vendola

In the News (Wed 10 Feb 10)

Italy - The challenge of the anti-capitalist Left
Against our arguments, the centrality of the victory of Nichi Vendola [4] in the Apulia region is presented as decisive proof of the correctness of the line and as an “example” for the future of the PRC.
In fact, the “Vendola example” is nothing but the determination to follow the road of reinforcing the political and cultural hegemony of the PRC and of the social movements, within the Union, starting from the rules and the rigid framework of this alliance.
[4] Nichi Vendola is the PRC candidate who won the presidency of the Apulia region.

Nichi Vendola - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nicola (Nichi) Vendola (born 26 August 1958), is an Italian politician and the president of Apulia region (he refused in fact to use in public the title of governor, commonly attributed to former tenants of the post).
Born in Terlizzi, province of Bari, Vendola was a member of the Communists Youth Federation since the age of 14, he studied literature in university, presenting a dissertation about the controversial poet and movie director Pier Paolo Pasolini.
Vendola, though, declares himself as "believer" (in the line of Pax Christi): he once said that "the most important book for a communist like me is the Bible".

Sweeter yet is the victory of Nichi Vendola, an openly gay (and very handsome) candidate of Partito della Rifondazione Comunista who had won the primary of the center-left coalition and then defeated outgoing president Raffaele Fitto in the former Christian Democrat stronghold Puglia in southern Italy.

 Nichi Vendola - Wikipedia

Besides sparking a diplomatic incident with Beijing, the comments reminded Italian voters that the term communism is still part of Italy's political vocabulary, 17 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
"Berlusconi is deliberately trying to feed this 'Ghostbusters' attitude, a hunt for ghouls," said Nichi Vendola, a member of the Communist Refoundation party, who was elected governor of the southern region of Puglia last year.
Vendola's victory shocked political pundits who could not believe that voters in Italy's traditional and Roman Catholic south would elect a man who was not just a communist, but also an earring-wearing homosexual.

In Lazio, the situation was quite confused by a political scandal involving the far-right Alternativa Sociale founded by Alessandra Mussolini; and in Puglia, the surprise victory of Nichi Vendola (communist, homosexual) over regional president Raffaele Fitto (telegenic dad) owed something to local factors, including Vendola’s capacity to win support from industrialists.
The poll was overshadowed by the death of Pope John Paul II the evening before.
The regional elections highlighted the need for a new generation of politicians like Piero Marrazzo (the victor in Lazio) and Nichi Vendola; but their time on the national stage has not yet come.

The Union (political coalition) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Primary elections have never been held on a national level before in Italy, and only once at a regional level, in Apulia: in that occasion, Nichi Vendola, a communist, a Catholic and a homosexual, became the candidate for the centre-left coalition in a region reputed to be conservative and with deep religious roots.
However, Vendola's victory against the incumbent governor and centre-right candidate Raffaele Fitto, a much more conventional and moderate young man, vindicated the primary elections in the internal argumentations of the Union.
When the primary elections were first proposed, they were mostly meant as a plebiscite for Romano Prodi, since there were no other candidates to the leadership of the coalition.
