His father, Robert Breakspear, had taken minor orders at the nearby monastery of St Albans and, as boys usually received their education at the local monastery, Nicholas was admitted there.
In about 1125 the young Nicholas Breakspear went south to enter the novitiate at the house of the Canons Regular of St Rufus at Avignon.
