Nicholas Murray Butler was instrumental in remaking Columbia College into Columbia University during his tenure as a philosophy professor (1885-1901) and as the university's president (1902- 1945).
Butler founded the Teachers College as a key part of the university in 1889, and during the 1920s he hired John Dewey, William Heard Kilpatrick, and George S. Counts to teach in the Teachers College.
Butler was a proud man, and he took great pains to ensure that his biographical entry in Who's Who remained the longest entry, surpassing the biographies of Benito Musso.....

In 1882, at the age of twenty, he received his bachelor's degree, in 1883, a master's degree, in 1884, a doctorate - all from Columbia College; in 1885 he studied in Paris and in Berlin where he began a lifelong friendship with Elihu Root, who was also destined to become a Nobel peace laureate.
Butler moved in the realm of politics as easily as he did in that of education.

The ship's list names Nicholas Butler with three children and five servants as coming from Eastwell, Co. Kent, in that year, of whom John, who came here, probably with his father, and Lydia who married John Minot of Dorchester, May 19, 1647, are two.
Nicholas is first mentioned in the records under date of May 8, 1653, when he participated in one of the divisions of land.
Two years prior to that, on Oct. 15, 1651, he had made his "well-beloved sonne John Butler" his attorney to collect and pay debts, which may be the most probable indication of the time of his leaving Dorchester and entrusting the settlement of his affairs there to his son.
