 Nicholas Co, Kentucky Genealogy
Nicholas county (KY's 42nd) was formed in 1799 from Bourbon County and Mason County.
Nicholas County is named for Col. George NICHOLAS of Fayette Co. The first settlement was at Blue Licks ca 1784 by David TANNER.
The county seat was established in Ellisville in 1805 on the James ELLIS farm and stayed county seat until 1816.

Nicholas County resident Leason T. Barlow is credited by some with having invented the Barlow knife, and R.C. King of Carlisle obtained a patent for a bluegrass seed stripper around 1870.
The population of the rural county was 6,508 in 1970; 7,157 in 1980; and 6,725 in 1990.

He was a civil engineer by profession, having equipped himself for that work at Moorefield, Kentucky, filled the office of county surveyor of Nicholas County many times, and was also prominent in the milling business there, being proprietor of a combined saw mill and grist mill.
Though he lived in Kentucky during the Civil war he was not actively connected with either side in the struggle.

Henry Razor progenitor of the Razor family originating in Fleming, Bath and Rowan counties in Kentucky, was born 11 July 1771 in Shepherdstown, Pennsylvania.
The exact time of Henry and Betsy arriving in Kentucky is not known but records show that their son, Samuel, was born in 1796 in Nicholas County, Kentucky.
There is a record in Fleming county stating that Henry bought 735 acres of land from Jasper Boyde, also a record that he received a Kentucky Land Grant in 1849 for an additional 200 acres.

 EPA: Pesticides - Pesticide Use Limitations for Nicholas County, Kentucky
Historically, the fanshell was widely distributed in the Ohio, Wabash, Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers as well as in larger tributaries in the states of Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Currently, it is believed that the fanshell only reproduces in: the Clinch River, Hancock County, TN and Scott County, VA; the Green River in Edmundson and Hart counties, KY; and the Licking River, in Campbell, Kenton and Pendelton counties, KY. Non-reproducing populations still occur in a few other rivers.
This species is endemic to Kentucky and is presently found in small numbers within the Blue Licks Battlefield State Park vicinity, and on rocky slopes and pastures where Robertson, Nicholas, and Fleming counties converge.
