Nicholas County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.30% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 26.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who were 65 years of age or older.
The median income for a household in the county was $26,974, and the median income for a family was $32,074.

 West Virginia County Histories
The county was named in honor of Daniel Boone (1734-1820), the famous hunter and explorer, founder of Kentucky, Lieutenant Colonel of the Virginia militia, and member of the Virginia General Assembly representing Kanawha County (in 1791).
Brooke County was named in honor of Robert Brooke (1751-1799), who was educated at the University of Edinburgh, practiced law in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, served in the Virginia General Assembly in 1794 and, later that year, was elected the third Governor of Virginia (1794-1796) by the General Assembly.
The county's economy become stagnant during the Civil War, and the burning of Guyandotte, one of the county's major population centers, was a major blow to the local economy.

Wilson Cary Nicholas was born on January 31, 1761 in Williamsburg, Virginia and later attended William and Mary College, leaving school in 1779 to enlist in the American Army.

While Richwood was the economic center for Nicholas County for most of the 20th Century, the county seat of Summersville has come to be the primary retail and business center during the past 25 years.
Richwood, however, is still by default the political and economic center of eastern Nicholas County, as it is the only incoporated city in the immediate area.
Richwood's primary road is a two lane route that is the commingling West Virginia Route 39 and West Virginia Route 55.

James D. Dawson was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as the United States Marshal for the Southern District of West Virginia on February 14, 2002, making him the twentieth Marshal in district history.
