English Madrigal School - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The development that caused the explosion of madrigal composition in England, however, was the development of native poetry — especially the sonnet — which was conducive to setting to music in the Italian style.
When Nicholas Yonge published Musica transalpina in 1588, it proved to be immensely popular, and the vogue for madrigal composition in England can be said to truly have started then.
Yonge himself published a second Musica transalpina in 1597, hoping to duplicate the success of the first collection.

To this end, it is thought that Musica Transalpina, a 1588 collection of translations of madrigal texts by Nicholas Yonge (d.1619),4 played a crucial role in spurring the development of the English madrigal and of music in England in general.
Yonge drew heavily (nineteen of the fiftyseven madrigals) on three anthologies of madrigals - Musica Divina (1583), Harmonia Celeste (1583), and Symphonia Angelica (1585) - published by Pierre Phalese at Antwerp.
Given Yonge's decision to call the prefatory material to Musica Transalpina a 'dedicatory epistle', it is likely that this use of a Martial letter, also quoted by Pliny, is a pun on Younger/Yonge by Yonge or his Gentleman.

 HOASM: The English Madrigal
Italian madrigals had been coming in from the 1560's, but it was not until Armada year that Nicholas Yonge published the first and most important collection of them in translation, Musica Transalpina.
Yonge had been stimulated by the output of the Netherlands music-publisher, PhalËse; in the ten years 1588-98, five anthologies of Italian madrigals were published in London, along with the first crops from English soil.
Yonge was a layclerk of St. Paul's who mentions 'a great number of gentlemen and merchants of good account, as well of this realm as of foreign nations...
