Zrinski's Latin letters (from which we learn that he was married a second time, to Sophia Löbl) are fluent and agreeable, but largely interspersed with Croatian and Hungarian expressions.

The Zrinski family, known also as Zrínyi in Hungarian, was a Croatian noble family, influential in the Hungarian Kingdom during the period in history marked by the Ottoman wars in Europe.
The Zrinskis, "those of Zrin", is a branch of the Šubić family, which arose when king Louis I the Great needed some of the Šubićs' fortresses for his coming wars against Venice, and the city of Zadar in particular.
Another Helen Zrinski was the wife of Francis I Rákóczi (whom she married in 1666) and of Imre Thököly (whom she married in 1682).

The Turks, to wipe out the disgrace of the Osijek affair, now laid siege to Novi Zrin (Újzrínyivár), a fortress which Zrinski had built, and the imperial troops under Montecuccolli looked on while he hastened to relieve it, refusing all assistance, with the result that the fortress fell.
It was also by the advice of Montecuccolli that the disgraceful peace of Vasvár was concluded.

Zrinski, giving the reins to his imagination, aimed at an independent principality in Croatia and Slavonia, if not at the crown of Hungary, while his son-in-law  was to recover Transylvania for the  Rákóczi family.
The life of Ferenc Rákóczi was saved by the mediation of his mother, Sophia Bathory, who had the double merit of being wealthy and also a devout Roman Catholic: but he had to abandon all his ambitious designs, and died in obscurity in 1676.

The Turkish offensives of 1663 were successfully repelled by the Croatian brothers Nicholas and Peter Zrinski.
This situation led to a conspiracy by the Zrinski brothers and key Hungarian nobles against the Hapsburg Court.
But the Turks warned the Hapsburgs of the conspiracy, and Peter Zrinski and his coconspirator Francis Frankopan were executed on 30 April 1671 (Nicholas Zrinski had died in 1664).

However, the present village is no longer the original old settlement which evolved from a fort dating back to ancient times.
The exact year is not recorded, but during the 16th century the old church of St. Nicholas was built, then enlarged in 1784, in appearance very similar to the St. Mary Magdalena church in Nerezine.
It was pulled down in order to build a simple, single-nave church with a rectangular sanctuary in 1908, which is still there today, with the campanile added in 1923.

The Franciscan Bernardin Pavlovic from Dubrovnik, born in Ston, had two works printed in Venice in 1747 "in the Croatian language." The title of the second work runs as follows: Salves for the dying...new and revised edition printed in Croatian for the benefit of the Croatian nation, Venice, 1747.
Their brave and successful defense of Boka was the reason of the arrival of Petar Zrinski, a famous Croatian statesman, who also had numerous dramatic battles with the Turks.
During his three day sojourn in Perast he presented his legendary sword to the town, as the sign of his recognition to their efforts to defend their homeland, and to stop the approach of the Ottoman Empire to Middle Europe.
