The Town of Nichols consists of 33.7 square miles and is located between the Susquehanna River to the north and west, the Town of Owego to the east, and Bradford County, Pennsylvania to the south.
The Village of Nichols consists of.51 square miles within the Town and has a population of 574 according to the 2000 Census.
The main intersection in the Village is the County road known as River Road and NYS Route 282, which lead to Pennsylvania.

The son of a prominent New York family, Nichols was a direct descendant of Colonel Sir Richard Nicolls (the spelling was changed in the 18th century), the English commander of the military expedition that took the surrender of New Netherlands from the Dutch in 1664.
In June of 1864 Nichols assumed command of the 9th New York Cavalry upon the death of Colonel William Sackett at the battle of Trevilian Station.
Colonel Nichols died on May 29, 1916 at the age of 96 and is buried in the cemetery of the Second Reformed Church in Athens, NY.

Plymouth, born 1839, was a soldier in the Fifth-sixth Regiment, New York, 1861-64.
He was the surveyor for the new town, and the first street to be laid out by him seems to have been Town Street, which extended from Beacham's lane to the crest of Goodman Hoyt's hill, and on this street all of the early planters built.

Jack Nichols Jr., a writer and editor and one of the first gay activists to take to the streets in Washington, Philadelphia and New York, died Monday of leukemia at Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cocoa Beach, Fla. He was 67.
Nichols was a charter member of the D.C. Mattachine Society and founded a Florida chapter in 1965.
Nichols was born in Chevy Chase, Md. He recalled in an interview last fall with Chicago's Windy City Times that he publicly acknowledged his homosexuality at 13 and became "a full-fledged, self-accepting gay teen" at 15, after reading Walt Whitman and other writers and philosophers.

 History of Nichols, NY
East Nichols is a post hamlet in the extreme southeast corner of the town, in an agricultural district, the inhabitants of which required for their convenience a postoffice and local mail distribution.
When Nichols was set off from Tioga, in 1824, it soon became necessary to establish the institutions of the new creation on a lasting basis, hence the name of the principal village was made to conform to that of the town.
Both were called Nichols, and in recognition of the compliment Colonel Nichols generously gave $200, to be invested for the permanent good of the town and village.

The town is situated near the center of the county, east of the West Transit, and is bounded on the north by Elm; on the east by Wales, on the south by Colden and on the west by East Hamburg.
The construction of the Buffalo, New York and Philadelphia (now the Western New York and Pennsylvania) Railroad in 1867 gave the latter place a new impetus, and in 1873 the old village corporation was extended over both villages, which took the name of East Aurora.
The Methodists erected an edifice in the Lower Village in 1827 which was long afterwards sold to James M. Boies and occupied for a time by the Evangelists and others; a new M. church was built in 1877.
