Topic: Nichrome

Nichrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nichrome is a brand name for nickel-chromium resistance wire, a non-magnetic alloy of nickel and chromium., A common alloy is 80% nickel and 20% chromium, but there are many others to accommodate various applications or lower cost.
Typically, Nichrome is wound in wire coils to a certain electrical resistance, and current passed through to produce heat.
Nichrome is used in the explosives and fireworks industry as a reliable ignition system, such as electric matches and model rocket igniters.

Assuming the Nichrome barely gets warm, move one alligator clip a few inches closer to shorten the portion of wire the 12 volts is being applied to.
Remove power from the Nichrome wire and touch the meter leads to the places on the Nichrome wire where the alligator clips were placed in step 3 to measure the resistance of the minimum length of Nichrome wire.
If the Nichrome wires are shorter than the length of the heater then you can stagger the Nichrome wires and connect them with copper wires.

Take the nichrome wire, wrap it first around the stripped copper of the longer lead, then wrap about 5-6 turns around the INSULATED part of the longer lead and then wrapping around the un-insulated part of the shorter lead (look at Fig.1).

Nichrome Wire AWG - Pyro Universe :: Community Forums
I take the 40 AWG nichrome and with a sewing needle pierce it diagonally through the visco, being sure to pass through the powder core of the visco.
Since it can prove to be a real pain to "sew" nichrome through the fuse of every firework you plan to e-fire, a more practical solution is to instead make your own igniters using visco and nichrome.
I have 36 AWG nichrome sitting at home, and as the wrapping around the fuse and piercing the powder core work very well, you may want to use a lower AWG if you are wrapping.

Nichrome wire can be found in old hairdryers, toasters, and even guitar strings.
The end of the fuse is clamped directly onto a segment of nichrome wire, keeping the igniter away from the device.

IRC's TanFilm vs. Nichrome Comparison Page
The packaging, sealing and mechanical protection of nichrome resistor films is critical to prevent failures in a nichrome chip when subjected to moisture.
Nichrome resistors were known to have moisture performance problems since their development by IRC in the 1950s.
General Electric concluded that the moisture performance of nichrome resistors is dependent on the integrity of the package, commenting, "As a consequence, nichrome chip resistors will not survive even short-term exposure to moisture unless protected or placed in a hermetic enclosure."

Since this concept does not guarantee ignition unless the nichrome wire is actually contacting the propellant grain, later igniters had a small "ball" of propellant cast onto the nichrome wire.
The nichrome (nickel-chromium, high resistance) wire serves as the heating filament (bridgewire), and is soldered to the ends of the copper wire leads using "stainless steel" solder.
A nichrome bridgewire is soldered to a pair of electrical leads, similar to that used for the "straw" igniter.

The second problem was attachment of the nichrome heater to the power bus wire.
We felt that the compressibility of the woven construction would allow the nichrome to move and that there would not be enough force at the grid connection to hold the nichrome against the bus wires.
A third improvement is the technique used to apply the nichrome heating wire.

For a wire of constant manufacture, all of these variables remain the same, so the resistance is constant.
