Bolkus became a Cabinet Minister for five years, as Minister for Administrative Services (1990-1993) (a Ministry which was later relegated out of Cabinet), and then Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Multicultural Affairs (1993-1996).
Nick Bolkus' main contribution to politics was during his three years as Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Multicultural Affairs (1993-1996) in the Second Keating Ministry.
Tony Abbott accused Bolkus of having breached the legal requirements of accepting a political donation.

Mr Bolkus, a former immigration minister who retired at the last election, sued the newspaper for defamation after it published a story in February 2004 about political donations and perceived loopholes in regulations.
Mr Bolkus was not mentioned in the story but his photograph was published along with the article.
Judge Burley accepted Mr Bolkus was angered by the article and concerned about the way his political opponents may have used it against him.

In defending his decision to grant a visa to Ng, Bolkus who was the former Australian immigration minister under the Labour Government said Ng has not re-offended, other than for some minor traffic infringements, and that his family has invested more than A$30 million in the state of South Australia.
Court records obtained by The Asian Pacific Post show that John Ng was convicted in Victoria, B.C. in 1992 of manslaughter and sentenced to six years' jail after confessing to shooting dead a college friend.
Commenting on the Ng case, he said: "My understanding is the decision was taken in consultation with him (Senator Bolkus) by a senior official of the department," he said.

Well Nick Bolkus says there were plenty of copies of these affidavits floating around in the hands of the press and there were plenty of articles around to show that.
If it is not Senator Bolkus they are looking at, can you guarantee that it is not someone in a Government Minister’s office guilty of the leak in the first place which spurred the first press article with all the details.
