Clegg was educated at Westminster School, a boys' independent school in London, and at Robinson College at the University of Cambridge, with postgraduate degrees from the University of Minnesota and the College of Europe, Brussels.
At the 2005 general election Clegg was elected for the Sheffield Hallam constituency, with a majority of 8,682.
A contributor to The Orange Book, Clegg was a strong supporter of a proposal by David Laws to replace the NHS with a guaranteed system of health insurance [1], but at other times has also been a critic of what he regards as an over-emphasis on deregulation in British transport policy [2].

I don't normally go in for hero worship of politicians, but Nick is the genuine article - a liberal by instinct and intellect, bright and articulate.
Nick Clegg is excellent, but I'd see the same values served by a first choice for Huhne than simply relying on waiting for Clegg to take over if Menzies wins.
I have a horrible feeling that Clegg is now screwed due to the intolerable weight of expectation that is now on top of him.

Mr Clegg was clearly trying to suggest that the rebate is unfair on the smaller nations, which is nonsense since they are all making profit from their membership.

Was chatting to a Political Correspondent chum of mine last night about the leadership race and he said Nick Clegg must be kicking himself for not standing this time.
Nick Clegg is one of these Orange Book Liberals who wants to make the party almost identical with new Labour and the new Tories.
I think Nick Clegg would appeal to voters across the board with the personable manner in which he speaks.

Even Charles Kennedy was sober enough, and Mark Oaten took time off from rent boys, to give serious consideration to prisoners and their human right to vote.
What I would like to see Nick Clegg pack into a single sentence, without the possibility of parole, unless he reforms his views on human rights, is first hand experience of being dehumanised.

It was an excellent speech which really went for the shallowness of Labour's rhetoric on crime, their obsession with new legislation (3,000 new offences since taking office) and their hideous illiberal approach to dealing with the new threats we face - which also won't deliver.
