Topic: Nick de Firmian

 [No title]
GM Nick de Firmian, the 1999 U.S. Champion, remains at the helm after having co- authored the 1990 version with Walter Korn.
De Firmian in MCO, however, only offers one of his own games, de Firmian Fishbein, 1997 Philadelphia, which saw 17 Qe2, a move viewed as dubious by Bosch because of 17...e5, played in Short Kasparov, 1993 London WCH.
De Firmian writes in the Introduction that "Some of my grandmaster colleagues have queried me whether MCO-14 is a book just for 'average' chess players, as it covers the whole spectrum of openings in one volume.

I remember twenty something years ago watching a game of chess between Nick de Firmian, then a good player now a Grandmaster, and an unnamed opponent.
Nick, his opponent, and other strong players began analyzing the moves, the what might have been.
Nick's opponent kept trying the same line, somehow persuaded that if he repeated it often enough it would save the game, and others would point out the error in his thinking.

Yet, I did not expect to surprise Nick (is it possible to surprise a chess pro in the computer age?!), as one of the most important games for this line was played between Miles and de Firmian himself!

Nick asked for and received some time to try to decompress, while Christiansen ran off to get some coffee and a smoke to calm his nerves.
Nick managed to break down Christiansen’s Burn French, winning the exchange, then a rook, and then managing to trade off all the pieces to tie the match.
Nick was very gracious in defeat, although in hindsight, I think he was just glad the suffering was over and he was still getting a very nice paycheck ($11,000) for his efforts.

CHESS OPENINGS THE EASY WAY by Grandmaster Nick de Firmian is a solid and useful book.
Unlike most of the books we’ve been looking at in the last two columns, the Club player, Internet player, or lower-to-middle-range tournament player can carry this one volume and no others with the guarantee of getting something intelligent to check his own moves against.
As de Firmian proved in the earlier and huge MCO 14, he is a genius at paring down variations while retaining the absolutely necessary information.

The viewer preferred the Batsford version, becuase it was easier to read - the paper was brighter/whiter and the font was easier to read.
