Nick was beset continually at recess and at noon by the boys, who immediately christened him "Dutchy." He laughed and did not seem to mind it, for his philosophy was that no words applied to him could injure him, and so long as the boys kept their hands off he did not care.

Nick and Sam laughed, for the frightened rodent scampered up the tree and ran out upon a heavy branch, where he whisked from sight and then back again, chattering in such a lively fashion that it was plain he had suffered no inconvenience from the bullet sent after him.

Nick: I'm fond of the word "Convivium" because this machine will be a conduit for vivacity, channelling the very essence of what it feels like to be alive.
Nick: We have two ways of knowing matter: one way is thru the senses where we perceive what matter looks and smells like from the outside.
Nick: Yes, Science has succeeded (perhaps too well) in taming Nature; now it's time to learn how to woo Her, seeing Her not as a collection of dead parts but approaching Nature as the very Body of the Beloved.

Mr Herbert was a Davis campaign manager in 2001 and is part of his campaign team this time too.

Consciousness and Quantum Reality: Jeffrey Mishlove interviews Nick Herbert
HERBERT: One of my claims to fame is that I have produced the shortest proof of Bell's theorem in existence.
HERBERT: Raw awareness, whatever that is. My feeling is that these correspond to the two types of observation, two types of phenomena, going on in quantum theory -- that there are these patterns, these are like computer data; and then there are the events themselves, the irreducible events, and that's like awareness.
HERBERT: He didn't like the sound of the voice, so we turned that off, and we just sat him in front of the typewriter, which came out on a typewriter as well as a TV screen.

As Nick Herbert puts it, "Whatever the math does on paper, the quantumstuff does in the outside world." It is as though you could create a good offense in a football game -- send the tight end racing down the sidelines and across the goal line -- by changing the numbers on the scoreboard.
Herbert has a sure instinct for explaining the facts of the laboratory results, and for contrasting these with what we would expect based on our experience, our world view.
These writers -- Zukav, Herbert and Pagels -- have made strenuous efforts to deal with the new understandings of physics within the broad framework of scientific traditions, but in the end they are not able to reconcile their basic scientific assumptions with the physics being described.

NICK: Well, I think that there are about half a dozen options for faster-than-light travel, but the two I would bet on are the space-warp, and the quantum connection.
NICK: Yes, the easiest way to resolve that would be to have a parallel universe, where you kill your grandmother, but she's not your grandmother, she's the grandmother of somebody else, who would have looked very much like you, who doesn't get born in that parallel universe.
NICK: This is a notion that quantum processes are somehow connected with consciousness, that some quantum processes are unspoken for, and can be taken over by discarnate spirits.
