Northpinellas: Planner returns to state for Oldsmar
Scoville was moving and could not be reached for comment this week.
Scoville was the community development director in Orange Beach (population: 3,780), for five years.
Scoville was one of three candidates who were interviewed for the position.

The new venture was virtually indistinguishable from its competitor and Scoville made no apologies for the similarities; he reasoned that since he was the originator of all that was good in the Picayune, he had greater rights to it than the proprietors of that sheet, who had not treated him well.
Scoville’s Pick was such a success that he was emboldened, on November 7, 1853, to launch Charivari, the first comic daily published in the United States.
Though initially Scoville stated that politics would have little place in his newspaper, he was a Democrat, a former secretary to John C. Calhoun, and a friend of the slave-holding south.

Caltech Astronomy : Nick Scoville's Research Interests
Nick Scoville is director of the Owens Valley millimeter array and Director of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory.
Theoretical studies have been done by Scoville (in collaboration with Colin Norman) aimed at understanding the overall evolution of merging galaxy systems such as the ultraluminous infrared galaxies.
They propose that the large quantities of interstellar gas in the nuclei of these galaxies will promote an intense burst of star formation, leading to the formation of a dense stellar cluster and a massive central flhole.

Title: The Cosmic Evolution Survey -- COSMOS Nick Scoville California Institute of Technology, and Institute for Astronomy Abstract: The COSMOS survey is designed to understand the coupled evolution of the universe's large scale structure and the formation of galaxies, dark matter halos, stars, and massive fl holes.
The survey covers an area of 2 deg with extensive imaging from Hubble, Subaru, Galex, XMM and the VLA and spectroscopy from the VLT and Keck.
Results from the first year of the survey will be described.

Scoville noted that images of UV hot stars could correspond to starburst galaxies with lots of massive hot young stars or to massive fl holes in galaxy centers with very hot accretion disks.
Scoville said that while no one knows what dark matter is, gravitational lensing could be used to "see" it due to concentration of mass.

Chili pepper heat is measured in Scoville Units (multiples of 100).
The method is named for Wilbur Scoville, who worked for the Parke-Davis pharmaceutical company in the U.S. The process measures the amount of capsaicin in parts per million.
According to the Scoville method, bell peppers are 0 on the scale while habanero peppers are over 300,000 units.

 Birth of a quasar
Now, a team led by Nick Scoville of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena has found evidence that quasar host galaxies contain large amounts of cold molecular gas, suggesting that they are spirals, or gas-rich systems of merging galaxies.
Using the Owens Valley Radio Observatory array in California, Scoville's team detected the signature of carbon monoxide in a sample of bright and relatively nearby quasars.
But the original starburst activity may have subsided, says Scoville, although the central fl hole would still be fed and fueled by the interstellar gas.

This heat (capsaicin), is contained within the placenta and the seeds of the pepper–the placenta is the whitish tissue surrounding the seeds and anchoring the seedbed to the inner walls (the seeds acquire their heat through contact with the placenta).
Wilbur Scoville developed this rating scale in 1912 on behalf of Parke-Davis Pharmaceuticals, but because he based it on the subjective observations of human tasters, it’s accuracy is often questioned.
Wilbur Scoville was a pharmacologist who devised the method to determine the hotness of a chile.

Caltech Press Release, 6/4/2001, Dr. Nick Scoville
In a presentation at the summer meeting of the American Astronomical Society, Caltech astronomy professor Nick Scoville and his colleagues reported today that the most luminous nearby optical quasar galaxies have massive reservoirs of interstellar gas much like the so-called ultraluminous infrared galaxies (or ULIRGs).
Thus, the fueling of the central fl hole in the quasars is strongly associated with the presence of an abundant interstellar gas supply.
The Scoville team used the millimeter-wave radio telescope array at Caltech's Owens Valley Radio Observatory near Bishop, California, for an extremely sensitive search for the emission of carbon monoxide (CO) molecules in a complete sample of the 12 nearest and brightest optical quasars previously catalogued at the Palomar 200-inch telescope in the 1970s.

Categorical Sequences Rob Nendorf rob.nendorf@wmich.edu Nick Scoville nickscoville@hotmail.com Jeffrey Strom jeff.strom@wmich.edu We define and study the categorical sequence of a space, which is a new formalism that streamlines the computation of the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of a space X by induction on its CW skelta.
The k-th term in the categorical sequence of a CW complex X, is the least integer n for which the n-skeleton of X has L-S category at least k.
The most important of the many examples that we offer is a simple proof of a theorem of Ghienne: if X is a member of the Mislin genus of the Lie group Sp(3), then cat(X) = cat(Sp(3)) (which is known to be 5).

In a presentation at the winter meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Washington, DC, Dr. Fabian Walter (Caltech), Dr. Axel Weiss (University of Bonn, Germany) and Caltech astronomy Professor Nick Scoville presented new observations of molecular gas in the nearby prototypical starburst galaxy M82.
The observations were obtained with Caltech's Millimeter Interferometer of the Owens Valley Radio Astronomy Observatory (OVRO), an array of six 10m radio telescopes which is located near Bishop, California.
The galaxy interactions have concentrated the molecular gas to the center of M82, leading to molecular cloud-cloud collisions and subsequent cloud collapses which causes the strong starburst activity.
