Nick Ut was instantly at work, photographing the soldiers, desperate refugees and early artillery and air-strike support for the soldiers whose advance had stalled.
Nick made his way back to Route-1, waiting like the soldiers, the travellers caught in their cars in the traffic jam outside Trang Bang, and a flock of other reporters for the planes to arrive and perform their bombing runs.
Nick Ut heard her saying to her also injured older brother Phan Thanh Tam, "I think I am going to die." (Tam is seen in Ut's award winning picture, running alongside her, at left).

 Huynh Cong Ut - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Huynh Cong Út, also known as Nick Ut (born March 29, 1951) is a photographer for the Associated Press (AP) who works out of Los Angeles.
Born in Long An, Vietnam, Ut began to take photographs for the Associated Press when he was 16, just after his older brother Huynh Thanh My, another AP photographer, was killed in Vietnam.
Ut has since worked for the Associated Press in Tokyo, South Korea, and Hanoi and still maintains contact with Kim Phuc, who now resides in Canada.

Ut was born on March 29, 1951 in the southern Mekong Delta province of Long An and was the younger brother of Vietnamese photographer Huynh Thanh My who had been killed a few weeks earlier while photographing combat action in the Mekong Delta on October 10, 1965 on assignment for The Associated Press.
Ut was looking for a job and Horst Faas hired him on January 1, 1966, after a trial period of six weeks.
Ut was evacuated on April 22, 1975, during the last week of the Vietnam War, in a plane headed for the Philippines.

Ut, 55, had cause to reminisce about that and other photos when approximately 200 people, including several TV news crews, arrived at The Associated Press' Los Angeles bureau Wednesday after word leaked out that a small party was being held to mark the photographer's 40th anniversary with the news service.
Ut joined the wire service to help support his family after his brother, also an AP photographer, was killed in 1965 while covering the Vietnam War.

Huynh Cong Ut (pronounced "oot"), known by his colleagues as Nick, was working there as a photo journalist for Associated Press at the time and took a number of photographs of the villagers trying to escape the napalm.
Ut poured water onto the young girl and took her and some of the other children to a hospital near Saigon where she spent fourteen months recovering from the horrific burns to her skin.
As an adult Kim studied medicine and in the early 1990s was allowed to leave Vietnam to further her studies in Cuba where she met her future husband and in 1992 she defected to Canada.

Nick’s dream car is a Range Rover, which is a little different than the old-school gray suburban he had during his freshman year.  Unfortunately, the suburban has been retired, but it was a classic and was nicknamed “The Beast” by all who loved it.
