Review - DVD: Abnormal - The Sinema Of Nick Zedd   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
Nick Zedd is unquestionably the king of New York's independent cinema, delivering his primitive cinematic vision in true DIY form for a quarter century now.
Zedd has inexplicably managed to survive long enough to become the Andy Warhol of the post Velvet Underground generation - able to reel in New York's cream of the mondo crowd (Lydia Lunch, Annie Sprinkle) for his perverse little vignettes.
Out-takes, interviews and Zedd on stage in his music persona, show the filmmaker as a serious, witty, charming, well respected man about town - not quite what is expected of the fiendish revolutionary of shock cinema, but a driven artist infatuated with breaking taboos for the sake of breaking taboos.

Although the literary value of Rollin's compiled grocery lists and Joe Cole's manic-depressive rants may be arguable, in the case of Nick Zedd's biography, I appreciate the sacrifice.
For some reason, however, Zedd's straight-ahead rolling narrative -- "this happened, then that happened and then this happened" -- is perfectly suited for his deadpan tales of sordid misadventure.
The gossipy tales of Zedd's machinations with other eighties low-rent luminaries, including Lydia Lunch and G.G Allen, are fun, although some of the names, such as frequent collaborator Richard Kern (here called Nazi Dick) have been changed to protect the guilty.

Nick Zedd - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nick Zedd (pseudonym, born James Harding May 8, 1958 in Baltimore, Maryland) is a New York City based filmmaker and author, coined the term Cinema of Transgression in 1985 to describe a loose-knit group of like-minded artists using shock value and humor in their work.
Zedd toured with Lisa Crystal Carver's Suckdog Circus and exhibited his films in the early 1990s.
Important essays outlining Zedd's philosophy are the Cinema of Transgression Manifesto, published pseudonymously in the Underground Film Bulletin (1984-90) and The Theory of Xenomorphosis (1998).

Since 1979, Nick Zedd and his films have been praised by independent filmmakers ranging from Jim Jarmusch to John Waters, making him indisputably the world's most famous living underground filmmaker.
While many have sold out to the mainstream Hollywood system, abandoning all that was ever personal or unique to their style in exchange for a shot at fame and fortune, Zedd has attained a hefty portion of his fame for refusing to do just that.
You might suspect it would be a dreary, self-indulgent read considering the title and the poverty-stricken life Zedd has often been forced to live in order to finance his films, but it's actually an amusing and pleasingly perverse account that should be appreciated by anyone with a fondness for honesty and, more importantly, sarcasm.

This film seems to be one of Nick Zedd’s better works, compared to his earlier pieces (see Steal This Video).
Having not read the book (apparently based on the bleak assertion that all human action is motivated by the desire for power), and in fact knowing little to nothing about the author at all, I can’t say exactly what this represents, but there seems to be an interesting premise for all kinds of philosophical fodder.
In the film, Nick (Zarathustra) spends his days in his NY apartment, talking to and confiding in a pin-up on his wall, and on this occasion his delusional dialog with the porn idol results in his declaration that he must ‘descend’, as if being reluctantly chosen for some important or divine mission.
