Nickel was reinstated in 1946 (the 12-sided shape was retained until 1963, when the coins again became round).
Unlike the U.S. coin of the same name, Canadian nickels were actually struck in 100% nickel originally (their American counterparts being 75% copper and only 25% nickel).
In 1982 the composition was changed to the same as that of the American five-cent piece—cupronickel (75% copper and 25% nickel)—and in 2000 it was changed again, to nickel-plated steel.

This was described as pure nickel by a seller who (a) had obviously never seen pure nickel and (b) didn't know that "babbitt" refers to a bearing alloy consisting typically of tin, lead, antimony, and copper.

In 1999, the Canadian Mint made a decision that at some point in the future (probably 2001) the 1 cent to 50 cent coins would be struck on nickel plated blanks, rather than solid nickel blanks.
The coins struck to be issued through the banks or for the standard Proof-like sets of the 12, were struck from nickle, while the Proof striking that came in a plush fitted box were struck from sterling silver.
In 1998, the Canadian Mint experimented with mint marked coins in the mint sets, placing a small "W" in front of the Queen's head on those struck at Winnipeg (the ones without the "W" were struck at Ottawa).
