Nickel Creek formed with Chris's father, bassist Scott Thile, when a bluegrass promoter thought it would be cute to have a kid's band, which resulted in the group touring festivals for a decade.
Nickel Creek may be a bluegrass group in instrumentation, but their music is likely to have wide appeal to fans of good singer-songwriters and just about anyone who enjoys sophisticated, melodic music.
Nickel Creek is presented by Chico Performances and is supported, in part, by grants from the California Arts Council, a state agency; the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency; Western States Arts Federation; and the City of Chico and its Arts Commission.

Nickel Creek is a Grammy Award-winning American acoustic music trio with roots in bluegrass, which is now sometimes described as "progressive bluegrass" or "progressive acoustic." The band is composed of three permanent members: Chris Thile (mandolin), Sara Watkins (violin), and her brother Sean Watkins (guitar).
Over the band's three official albums, Nickel Creek's musical style seems to have shifted from contemporary bluegrass to the incorporation of indie rock elements, covering songs by Radiohead, Pavement and Bob Dylan.
In the Summer of 2006 via Billboard Magazine and their official website, Nickel Creek announced that at the end of the year they would no longer be recording together as a group and their tour scheduled through 2007 would be their last for an indefinite period of time.

Nickel Creek has nothing against bluegrass -- it's integral to their drum-free, finger-picked approach.

Nickel Creek, meanwhile, came up through the Bluegrass scene, after the three San Diego natives -- guitarist Sean Watkins, mandolin player Chris Thile and Watkins' sister, fiddle player Sara Watkins -- met in 1989 at a local eatery, That Pizza Place, which sponsored a weekly Bluegrass night.
Song for song, it is Nickel Creek's strongest effort, one that expands the scope of the group's music without betraying their Bluegrass roots.
Watkins says all three members of Nickel Creek tried to be open-minded in their songwriting and take whatever stylistic paths best served the songs, without worrying about expectations of others.

San Diego is not exactly known as a hotbed of contemporary bluegrass music, but then again, Nickel Creek are a far cry from most bluegrass bands you've ever heard.
The Krauss / Union Station influence is evident, but Nickel Creek avoids the temptation to copycat the producer by performing several touching originals and tossing in a few fret-burning instrumentals (with a surprising celtic feel to them) for good measure.
Nickel Creek is a great example of this, and the label 'bluegrass' is applied because of the instrumental lineup...if it has a mandolin (or dobro or banjo) it MUST be bluegrass!
