Nickel-cadmium battery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The nickel-cadmium battery (commonly abbreviated NiCd or NiCad) is a popular type of rechargeable battery for portable electronics and toys using the metals nickel and cadmium as the active chemicals.
NiCd batteries contain a nickel hydroxide positive electrode plate, a cadmium hydroxide negative electrode plate, a separator, and an alkaline electrolyte.
NiCd batteries contain cadmium, which is a toxic heavy metal and therefore requires special care when the batteries are disposed of.

Industry Program to Collect Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cd) Batteries
Cadmium, on the other hand, is used as an electrode material, the power source of the battery.
The amount of cadmium in Ni-Cds cannot be reduced because this would cause a proportionate reduction in the energy output of the battery.
Cadmium is toxic to fish and wildlife and can pass to humans through the food chain.

Nickel Magazine, December 2001   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Nickel magazine, Dec. 01 -- Automakers are big users of nickel and automotive engineers are choosing nickel alloys and nickel-containing stainless steels to meet a wide range of technical needs in the manufacture of increasingly sophisticated vehicles.
Three such applications are featured in this issue: the fabrication of gas-impermeable fuel tanks that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions; rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries in zero-emissions electric cars that could help clear the air in major urban centres; and the environmentally responsible electroplating of various auto parts, such as wheels.
We also report on the use of nickel-containing stainless steel in a state-of-the-art press that processes the rubber in worn car tires so it can be reused to make other components, such as mud flaps.

 ATSDR - ToxFAQs™: Cadmium
Cadmium is a natural element in the earth's crust.
Cadmium stays in the body a very long time and can build up from many years of exposure to low levels.
Long-term exposure to lower levels of cadmium in air, food, or water leads to a buildup of cadmium in the kidneys and possible kidney disease.

Nickel- cadmium cells are more efficient, longer lived, and much more rugged than the lead-acid cells.
This is the first in a series of articles about using large pocket plate nickel- cadmium batteries in home power systems.
In the nicad cell, the reactive ingredients are held in pockets in an inert grid of nickel plated steel.

 Nicads
Nickel Cadmium batteries are here to stay with us for a while yet so most of you will use them sooner or later.
(Cadmium is widely used as an orange/yellow colouring agent for plastics and as a coating for screws.) The construction of a nicad cell should be borne in mind because it affects the response of the cell when it is misused.
Cadmium from the cathode is converted into cadmium hydroxide which goes into solution as the cell is discharged.

Collecting, packaging, transporting, reclaiming spent Nickel-Cadmium Batteries
In 1992, approximately 56,000 tons of nickel, chromium and iron bearing wastes, including 1,200 tons of spent nickel- cadmium and nickel-iron batteries, were recycled by Inmetco.
The scrubber water is treated in the waste water treatment plant where the cadmium is precipitated along with zinc and lead then pressed into a cake.
The reduced nickel is transferred to the Electric Arc Furnace where it becomes part of a nickel, chromium and iron bath formed at nearly 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

How to charge nickel cadmium batteries
Nickel cadmium battery chargers should cut the charge off when the termperture exceeds the maximum charging temperature, typically 45 degrees C for a controlled fast charge, and 50 degrees C for an overnight or fast charge.
The cheapest way to charge a nickel cadmium battery is to charge at C/10 (10% of the rated capacity per hour) for 16 hours..
Some nickel cadmium cells are designed to be "quick chargeable." This is just a timed charge at C/3 for 5 hours, or C/5 for 8 hours.

One of the battery electrodes is fabricated from carbonyl nickel powder; additional nickel is deposited onto it.
Charles River Associates estimates that the nickel powder used in the Western World for batteries is currently 15 to 20 million pounds -- a relatively modest fraction of the total nickel production, but a substantial fraction of the nickel powder produced.
Because cadmium is classified as a hazardous material, the major threat to nickel-cadmium batteries stems from the concern for their disposal.

MTI Technologies - Products - Honda Pocket Type Nickel Cadmium Batteries
Active material for the positive plate is mainly composed of nickel hydroxide while that for the negative plate is mainly of either cadmium or cadmium hydroxide.
These remarkable attributes of the MTI's Honda alkaline battery are widely known as the main reason for its superior properties and reliability including the rugged and long-life performance as well as the excellent high-rate discharge and low-temperature operation, as compared with a lead acid battery.
The positive and negative plates are placed alternately, i.e., a positive plate, a negative plate, again a positive plate and so on, and spaced properly apart by nickel plated washers inserted in between, and then fastened together by means of nuts.
