Nickel-cadmium battery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The nickel-cadmium battery (commonly abbreviated NiCd or NiCad) is a popular type of rechargeable battery for portable electronics and toys, using the metals nickel (Ni) and cadmium (Cd) as the active chemicals.
Even early nickel-cadmium batteries were physically and chemically robust.
The apparent symptom is that the battery "remembers" the point in its charge cycle where recharging began and during subsequent use suffers a sudden drop in voltage at that point, as if the battery had been discharged.

EPA: Federal Register: Electrical Installation, Nickel Cadmium Battery Installation, and Nickel Cadmium Battery Storage
Current industry practice requires that the nickel cadmium batteries used to start the Engine or Auxiliary Power Unit must have a system to control the battery to prevent overheating, a temperature sensing and over-temperature warning system, or a battery failure sensing and warning system with a means for disconnecting the battery.
In line with current industry practice, nickel cadmium batteries used to power the Engine and Auxiliary Power Unit are tested to prevent any hazardous effect on structure or essential systems that may be caused by overheating of the battery or its individual cells.
* * * * * (c) * * * (5) Each nickel cadmium battery installation must have provisions to prevent any hazardous effect on structure or essential systems that may be caused by the maximum amount of heat the battery can generate during a short circuit of the battery or of individual cells.

Nickel-cadmium battery conditioner and tester apparatus - Patent 4517517
A battery tester apparatus having a discharge circuit with a visual indicator that the discharge cycle is in progress operating in combination with a comparator to determine when the terminal voltage of the battery is reached.
By deep discharging, the state of charge of the battery is tested under operational type conditions and by timing the length of time it takes for a battery under test to change its state of charge condition from its fully charged state to its terminal voltage, is a test of its charge carrying capabilities.
The battery test apparatus provides a battery discharge circuit that discharges the battery under test until a specified terminal voltage level is reached wherein the discharge cycle is automatically terminated.

How to charge nickel cadmium batteries
Nickel cadmium battery chargers should cut the charge off when the termperture exceeds the maximum charging temperature, typically 45 degrees C for a controlled fast charge, and 50 degrees C for an overnight or fast charge.
The cheapest way to charge a nickel cadmium battery is to charge at C/10 (10% of the rated capacity per hour) for 16 hours..
Some nickel cadmium cells are designed to be "quick chargeable." This is just a timed charge at C/3 for 5 hours, or C/5 for 8 hours.

The Nickel-Cadmium Battery (from battery and fuel cell) --  Britannica Student Encyclopedia
The nickel-cadmium battery, another rechargeable type, was first used on a large scale in 1917 to help light the subway trains in Paris.
Although the term battery, in strict usage, designates an assembly of two or more galvanic cells capable of such energy conversion, it is commonly applied to a single cell of this kind.
The name cadmium originated with the Greek word kadmeia, which was used for a zinc ore known as Cadmean earth.

American Metal Market: Electric cars gear up for demand rise; nickel-cadmium battery has promise for its long life and fast recharge - Supplement: Nickel
The nickel-cadmium battery manufacturers are working equally hard to reduce the cost of industrial nickel-cadmium batteries for electric vehicles by mass-production techniques and to improve energy density to increase vehicle range between recharges.
However, nickel-iron batteries can't be rapidly recharged, are not maintenance-free, and compared with nickel-cadmium batteries, have inferior power density, a parameter that is important for vehicle acceleration.
The most critical factor in favor of nickel-cadmium batteries is their long cycle life.

Battery Software - Alcad - battery sizing, nickel-cadmium battery
Three battery sizing options are available: the UPS and Engine Starting options are application-specific sizing methods; and the IEEE option is a sizing method that conforms to the IEEE 1115 and 485 sizing recommendations.
The software will take your application parameters, calculate the battery, and allow you to choose a stand, if required, and produces the layout of the battery including the dimensions.
They retain the capability of automatically calculating from your data the options from the wide range of Alcad batteries but now allows more control over the number of cells making up the battery and produces a battery layout showing the configuration of your chosen battery.
