CD Baby: RAOUL BJORKENHEIM AND NICKY SKOPELITIS: Revelator
Nicky Skopelitis, a lifelong New York native, studied the trumpet as a child before gravitating to the guitar and a multitude of stringed instruments.
Skopelitis' influence can also be heard on a multi-layered ambient-jazz excursion with legendary drummer Tony Williams (featuring Pharoah Sanders, Byard Lancaster and cornetist Graham Haynes) under the group name of Arcana, released on Axiom in 1997 as Arc of the Testimony.
After two independent recordings titled Ritual and Alive (the latter a live document of a stripped-down power trio that led to performances with drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson), Krakatau was signed to the ECM label for a series of releases that began with the critically acclaimed Volition in 1993.

Though Skopelitis has recorded only two albums as a bandleader, (Ekstasis; Wake Up and Dream) he has appeared on dozens--perhaps hundreds--of recordings, often collaborating with prolific bass guitarist and producer Bill Laswell.

Skopelitis disdains pyrotechnics, preferring to submerge himself in the music, but wields a remarkably sure hand, providing rich color and accents.
Baker's typically heavy drumming may seem leaden to some, but provides both a compelling thrust and enough bedrock to anchor compositions that might otherwise appear a bit on the fluffy side.

Nicky Skopelitis has made some great albums, but he's never been a lone gunman.
An album like Revelator, put together with Raoul Björkenheim (and produced by, who else, Laswell), is business as usual for li'l Nicky.
This time around, we got guitar duets accompanied by tabla and "sounds" (oh, that wacky Billy L!), and it should come as no surprise that Skopelitis comes up with beautiful accompaniments (and solos, too, mind you.

But one essential trait they do share is an inexhaustible thirst for new directions and new sensibilities in music, and with Revelator — a collaboration that, true to its title, attempts to reveal the unexpected as it also explores a slightly spiritual edge — the guitar becomes a vehicle for two distinct voices.
Other tracks are deeply vivid in their imagery; "Fresh Meat and Roses" conjures a sensuous nomadic dirge — a humid trail through phantasmagorical mists of sound, the low end undulating like the constantly shifting dunes of the desert, while "Right As Rain" suggests acoustic rivulets flowing into some distant ocean.
In this respect, Revelator lives up to its name as an ecstatic and illuminating musical statement, and as a revealer of creative secrets no one had really thought to try and decipher...until now.

Issued under Ginger Baker's name, the working title for this band was No Material, appropriate given the thrown-together nature of the group and the fact that their performances, all three of them, were totally improvised.
Guitarist Nicky Skopelitis was the creative force and musical center of the band, forming the hub between the essentially rock-oriented leanings of Baker and bassist Jan Kazda and the explosively free tendencies of the Last Exit front line of Brotzmann and Sharrock.

Fortunately, a preview cassette of Nicky Skopelitis' ‘Ekstatis’ (Axiom) managed to fit into my Toyota's seldom used tape player, but I could never keep straight which track I was listening to.
Contributing to the unholy mess are Foday Musa Suso on kora, oudist/violinist Simon Shaheen, gospel organist Amina Claudine Myers, percussionists Zakir Hussain, Aiyb Dieng and Guilherme Franco, and, consistently providing the most bracing moments, Bachir Attar (leader of the Master Musicians of Jajouka) raising hell on the plague-of-locusts vernacular oboe, the rhaita.
Skopelitis keeps his head down most of the time, supplying frippertronic sine waves one moment, chording beautiful rhythms the next, but never hogging the limelight just because his name happens to be on the cover.
