Nicky Wire, I Killed The Zeitgeist, Album Review
Whenever a non-vocalist band member releases a solo record, there is a degree of apprehension toward how they will perform on vocal duties - surely if they were a good singer they'd be doing it for their band.
Wire has a rough tone that may not be to everyone's liking, but he knows his limits and cleverly blends it with music that suits - the laidback "Withdraw Retreat" being a good example of this.
Wire had produced a consistent collection of songs that show why the Manics have had so many hits, but without the input of the other members they lose the chemistry that has made the band so successful.

Nicky Wire is the lyricist, bass guitar player and occasional vocalist with the Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers.
Nicky usually plays the Gibson Thunderbird, Rickenbacker, or more recently the Fender jazz bass and quite often dons a dress for their gigs although he has curtailed his glam since the mysterious disappearance of Richey in 1995.
He doesn't really live up to the typical rock and roll image and until recently still lived in an end of terrace house in a village near Blackwood.

No one was sure about Nicky's composing or playing skills, his voice and his very rough singing divides opinions into extremes, and him doing a solo album was quite an absurd thought when it was first announced.
Nicky isn't a good singer, a lot of the tunes are quite simple and overall there's this amateur feeling over it.
Nicky's is rough, lo-fi recording by a guy who can't really sing, James' is a shiny and excellently produced album from a person who is respected as both a singer and a songwriter.

Wire wore his university gown on stage during the concert, which is part of the band's latest UK tour.
Wire, whose real name is Nicholas Jones, was one of the founder members of the Manic Street Preachers in 1988, along with fellow Swansea student Richey Edwards.
Wire also told BBC 6 Music that the Manics had played their first show as a four-piece in Swansea at Mandela Hall alongside Edwards, who went missing 10 years ago.

Yet offstage, Nicky is a teetotal homebody with a cleanliness regime that borders on the obsessive-compulsive and - count 'em - three Dyson vacuum cleaners.
Born in the rundown former mining town of Blackwood, and brought up a mere 200 yards from Richey Edwards, Nicky was a gangly boy who excelled at sports, especially football - indeed, he even received a trial for Arsenal football club, although a bad back put pay to any dreams of a career at Highbury.

Wire was born Nicholas Allen Jones in the Welsh community of Blackwood on January 20, 1969.
Wire was a talented soccer player as a teenager and received a degree in Law and Political Science from the University of Wales Swansea, but he ended up following a different career path when he joined the band Betty Blue in 1986, while still a student.
Wire shared lyric writing with James from band's debut, but when James vanished, Wire became their sole wordsmith, and his new responsibilities coincided with the band's most successful period.

Nicky Wire - I Killed The Zeitgeist : album review
A lot of the credit for the band's early years has to go to Richey Edwards of course, but it would be wrong to play down the influence of his writing partner Nicky Wire.
While James Dean Bradfield and Sean Moore were the musical brains behind the band, it was Edwards and Wire who set out their aesthetic - the very thing that made them unique when they first started.
Ultimately, this should be treated as what it is - an excuse for Wire to experiment and be unconstrained by the job of being in a band.

"This is my last crusade," says Nicky Wire in his solo debut.
Though his indelicate voice - a cross between an under-the-weather Graham Coxon and underwhelmed Lou Reed - is something only a fan of vacuuming could love, the lack of frills adds a nihilistic edge to the tasteful romance.
Sehnsucht, a tender instrumental, is named for the German word for "longing", and the theme runs like electricity through the poetic, political, intensely personal songs.

Nicky Wire - I Killed The Zeitgeist - Music - Album - Review - Time Out London
News then, of the solo debut by their bass player Nicky Wire – Dyson endorser and former enthusiastic wearer of leopard-print frocks – might inspire great excitement in the Manics’ camp, but summon dread in any other half sane being.
Given that James Dean Bradfield played to epic-rock type on his recent solo LP, that might have left Wire all washed up with no place to go, but ‘I Killed The Zeitgeist’ is a surprisingly creditable effort that sees him striking out in fairly unlikely directions.
And the 'one that ran away', seriously bad taste, whatever you think of the manics or Nicky Wire.

Seemingly, Nicky Wire is one of the aforementioned, and his pending new album is evidence enough that even being a major rock and roll star isn’t quite enough for some to cure that creative itch.
Time stolen between Manics albums, Wire decided to haul himself off to a local studio and try out some of his own material.
Although ultimately holding underlying political or social worries, Manics songs are not a world a way from this solo attempt of Wires, and despite not ticking all the boxes for a usual Manics hit, the moment Wire’s heartfelt lyricism hits, you know you’ve heard it a thousand times before, and it really, never gets old.

NICKY WIRE'S SECRET SOCIETY at Stay Beautiful, Sat 1st July 2006
At last, Wire and his entourage swept into the room, too suddenly for the pre-arranged Sex Pistols “Johnny B Goode/Roadrunner” intro music (bit of a lack of communication, and he had to make do with Bowie’s “Suffragette City” instead).
Wire’s admittedly amateurish guitar playing, and a voice which compensates with enthusiasm what it lacks in technique, were offset by his excellent backing band The Secret Society, marshalled by drummer and long-time Manics collaborator Greg Haver (about whom a camera crew were making a documentary).
A large number of the Wire fans stuck around while we played fairly shameless Greatest-Hits-plus-Manics sets and, by the amount of stage-invading and pole-dancing that went on, seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves.

James Dean Bradfield – The Great Western/Nicky Wire – I Killed The Zeitgeist, 05/12/06, á la discothèque
I am well aware that there are few bands out there who summon the spirit of Marmite quite like the Manic Street Preachers, so it was quite intriguing to watch the solo albums by the two remaining guitarists, lead guitarist/singer James Dean Bradfield and bassist/lyricist Nicky Wire, attract neither delirious praise nor acidic bile.
Nicky Wire on the other hand is famous for not having a good singing voice, more a ranting tool.
But if JDB was always expected to come up with a solid album then Wire’s has been the greater triumph as even avid Manics fans did not expect him to come up with something as good as I Killed The Zeitgeist.

The Manics have a back catalogue that bands that have been going since the seventies would envy, and they use it brilliantly — be in no doubt, their live shows are essentially greatest hits performances.
Nicky Wire and drummer Sean Moore flee the stage halfway through and Bradfield gives an excellent solo acoustic performance of ‘The Everlasting’, before the band rejoin him (Nicky, brilliantly, wearing a new costume) for an extended performance of Holy Bible dirge ‘Archives of Pain’.
