Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov (Russian: Николай Андреевич Римский-Корсаков, Nikolaj Andreevič Rimskij-Korsakov), also Nikolay, Nicolai, and Rimsky-Korsakoff, (March 6/18, 1844–June 8/21, 1908) was a Russian composer and teacher of classical music particularly noted for his fine orchestration, which may have been influenced by his synaesthesia.

NICOLAI ANDREIEVICH RIMSKY-KORSAKOV was born on March 18, 1844, in Tishkin, near Novgorod, Russia, and died in Liubensk, near Saint Petersburg, on June 21, 1908.

Nicolai’s musical gifts had also manifested early, and by the time he began cadet school, he was already a fairly good pianist and an eager if unpolished composer.

Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908), though the youngest of the group, had the most lasting influence, not only through his compositions and his book on orchestration, but also through his students (who included Ippolitov-Ivanov, Stravinsky, and Prokofiev).
His composition teachers there included Rimsky -Korsakov and Tcherepnin; he also won first prize in piano before graduating.
Although he had studied the piano as a youngster, he had an otherwise limited musical background, and indeed at first pursued a career as a naval officer.

Walt Disney Concert Hall - Piece Detail
Because music as a profession had not achieved social respectability in his country, Rimsky entered naval college at the age of 12, became an officer, and spent three years at sea, and for a dozen years was Inspector of Naval Bands.
The nature of Rimsky’s creativity evolved slowly, for the young Russian had to divide his time between music and a primary career.
The composer denied the existence of a specific program for the work, explaining that most of the melodies do service for a variety of unrelated situations and moods, and in a subsequent edition he even disposed of the descriptive headings he had originally given to the movements.

Rimsky's general strategy appeared in his symphonic sketch Sadko (1867), in which folkloric elements are couched in coloristic harmony and orchestration.
Eleven of Rimsky's 15 operas appeared between 1895 and 1907, beginning with Christmas Eve (1895) and ending with The Golden Cockerel (1907).
The folk music of Russia, including that of the Caucasus and Trans-Caucasus peoples, permeates Rimsky's music.

 NPR's SymphonyCast
Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov was musically the best educated and the most industrious of the five 19th-century Russian nationalistic composers who loosely banded together to call themselves The Mighty Handful.
This now-standard version of A Night on Bald Mountain is colored with Rimsky's ideas in terms of its harmony, orchestration and form, as is the case with many other incomplete works by Mussorgsky and other members of Russia's 19th-century nationalist school of composers.
As is evident at tonight's concert, it was he who gathered up the scattered, often fragmentary legacy left by Alexander Borodin and Modest Mussorgsky, completing, arranging, re-harmonizing and orchestrating it in a manner he considered acceptable to Western ears.

Rimsky was possessed of this genius to a degree approached by only one other composer - Richard Strauss.
He wrote, in Scheherazade, music that is neither profound nor superficial, neither intellectual nor sensual, nor greatly varied or highly developed in its melodic content; yet he accomplished a living, moving musical portrait of the East, as fancy would have it, that is one of our musical treasures.

Rimsky is less shaky structurally than Balakirev (the concerto develops one folk-like theme), but he's also less ambitious.
Rimsky is there to sing, rather than storm the heavens.
I can't imagine the current crop of virtuosi spending the time to learn it, however, so this recording will probably have to do, which, it turns out, is as exquisite as the work itself.

In fact, even "The Flight of the Bumblebee" comes from an opera -- Rimsky's The Tsar's Bride.
But the creator of "Sheherazade" and "The Flight of the Bumblebee" once had a musical and theatrical experience so profound that afterward, he wrote almost nothing but operas.
The experience that changed the composer's life took place in 1879, when he saw Wagner's immense cycle The Ring of the Nibelungen for the first time.
