The Nicollet Mall is an upscale shopping and dining district designed to appeal to the (additional info and facts about white-collar) white-collar workers who form much of downtown Minneapolis's daytime community.
Farther south on Nicollet Mall is the former flagship (A city in southwest Ohio; manufacturing center) Dayton's (A large retail store organized into departments offering a variety of merchandise; commonly part of a retail chain) department store, now a Marshall Fields.

Nicollet Mall proper is only about 11 blocks long, however it extends well south of downtown Minneapolis into residential districts of the city as Nicollet Avenue.
Although Nicollet Avenue's most noteworthy stretch is in the commercial district downtown, in recent years the stretch of ethnic restaraunts Nicollect Avenue from Grant Street southward to 29th Street, known as Eat Street has become quite popular.
The Nicollet Mall station is one of the 17 light right stations that will be open once the project is complete.

Nicollet Mall is a 12 block long pedestrian thoroughfare between Washington Ave and 13th St. It was one of the first pedestrian malls when it was created in 1967.
The mall was made famous in 1970 in the opening sequence of the Mary Tyler Moore show, in which she walks on to a nearby street and throws her hat into the air.
Recently a monument was constructed to honor Moore's character on the mall.

Nicollet Mall has a presence about it, one which I find particularly pleasing.

I wouldn't say the Nicollet Mall area is in decline at all -- the farmer's market there is fun.
Mall of America (which you can ride the new light-rail to from downtown) is chock full of things for your kids and would be well worth spending one day.
Nicollete Mall may not be entertaining for the kids per se, but if we are close enough we can maybe walk to different restaurants at night or take turns wandering while one parent stays back during nap time, etc....

Has a traffic study been conducted recently that considered whether Nicollet Mall - with one driving lane in each direction - is best used as a primary transit corridor for large busses?
The high volume of passengers getting on and off the bus, and the lack of a passing lane on Nicollet, seems to be creating both the slow service downtown, and bus / bike complications.
As a biker, I bet it is awfully tempting to pass a crawling (likely) or stopped bus (also likely).

When, due to the construction of the LRT line, all the Hennepin and Nicollet buses ran on Nicollet Mall, it was a mess.
Now, all the buses running on Hennepin has turned out to be faster and more convenient than I expected.
Oh, excuse me, TCF-Holidazzle, or whatever it's called now.) I've become convinced that there is no real reason to run buses between Washington and 8th on Nicollet.

[TB] Neither have I seen them tag the busses that run the red light while headed east on 12th as they cross the mall, they hardly even slow down.
Going south on Marquette they _usually_ tap their horn as they run the red light at 9th after dropping of passengers.
