Trondheim is situated where the river Nidelva meets a large fjord; Trondheimsfjorden, and is the centre of the Trondheim Region.
Trondheim is located at the mouth of the river Nidelva, due to its excellent harbour and sheltered condition.
Moose and deer are common in the hills surrounding the city, and might wander into the city, especially in May when the bewildered one year old is chased away by the mother, or in late winter when food grows scarce in the snowcovered higher regions.

In the upper parts of the river Nidelva (Løkaunet - Øvre Leirfoss), brown trout is the most abundant fish species, and the yield (CPUE) on bottom gillnet series (mesh sizes 21 - 45 mm) was high, however lower than in the 1980ies.
Minnows are earlier not found in Nidelva, but a dispersal from higher up in the Nea-Nidelv watercourse has been expected.
