The Gruiformes (Cranes and their relatives)
The young are nidifugous meaning they hatch with a set of feathers and can follow their parents straight away (like chickens, not like pigeons which are nidicolous).
The young is nidifugous and can leave the nest in 3 days and is fed by its parents for about 30 days.
The young are nidifugous but remain in the nest for two or three weeks being fed by the adults.

 British Garden Birds - Glossary
A nestling is generally a bird that is either too young and frail to leave the nest or is still dependent on its parents.
There are two types of nestling: nidifugous and nidicolous.
A nidifugous (or precocial) nestling is down covered and active shortly after hatching and can leave the nest if necessary.

INCREASE OF PARENTAL EFFORT WITH BROOD SIZE IN A NIDIFUGOUS BIRD
Proof is still wanting, but in migrating populations brood-size-dependent energy costs and food deficits may lower the parents' survival, future reproductive success, or both.
Clutch size in such nidifugous birds may be adapted to selec- tion pressures acting after hatching, as is ap- parently true in altricial birds.
In geese, selection pressures that limit clutch size might be counteracted by the effect that larger families tend to be more dominant in wild flocks (Bc.yd 1953, Hanson 1953, Raveling 1970).

Ornithologists tell us that these birds are precocial and nidifugous.
Nidifugous, a word that every parent should know and love, stems from nidi, nest and fugi, to flee; describing a chick which is quickly able to leave (flee) the nest.

But, then there is a nidifugous species that can't wait to "flee" the nest.
But I want to be free also to let you know what I am thinking as I learn these words.

 The Bird's Egg
As a general rule, species with 'Precocial' or 'Nidifugous' young have less yolk than those with 'Altricial' or 'Nidicolous' young.
These are now called 'Precocial' young though the term 'Nidifugous' = 'Nest fleeing' was used in the past and can still be found in many books.
Others like pigeons are hatched with few feathers and are unable to stand on their own.

I suspect that most would regard nidifugous/nidicolous as more specific than precocial/altricial, but it's a pretty subtle distinction.
Etymologically, nidifugous is "nest-fleeing" and nidicolous is "nest-dwelling".
The terms describe whether young remain in the nest after hatching.

In all responsible societies, protecting the children from variety of abuses has been a major issue and a source of several legislations.
It has been recognized that children of human beings, unlike many others, are not nidifugous and therefore can be subjected to many forms of abuses against which they need protection.

Precocial birds -- also nidifugous -- waterfowl, gallinaceous birds (pheasants, quail and chickens).
Altricial birds -- also nidiculous -- raptors and psittacines are the one most frequently seen in a clinical setting, so subsequent comments on behavior will relate to altricial birds for the most part.
