Niels Kaj Jerne FRS (December 23, 1911 – October 7, 1994) was a Danish (English-born) immunologist.
He graduated from the University of Copenhagen with a degree in medicine in 1947, and in 1951 hes was awarded the doctorate for a thesis titled "A Study of Avidity Based on Rabbit Skin Responses to Diphteria Toxin-Antitoxin Mixtures".
The antibody formation theory gave Jerne international recognition and in 1956 Jerne went to work for the World Health Organization in Geneva, where he served as the Head of the Sections of Biological Standards and of Immunology.

Jerne's most important immunological theory is that of the idiotypic network, a regulatory interaction between lymphocytes that is produced when receptors on one lymphocyte recognize and bind the receptors on a second lymphocyte.
Jerne was born in London, and went to school in Holland, where he studied physics for two years at the University of Leiden, before moving to Copenhagen to study medicine.
Jerne continued to theorize on the nature of antibodies and immunology, happy for others to take up his ideas and modify and develop them.

In 1969, after conducting research in the United States and West Germany (now part of the united Federal Republic of Germany), he became director of the Basel Institute of Technology in Switzerland.
Jerne's work helped to elucidate the underlying concepts of the workings of the immune system at the cellular level.
His major contributions to the study of the immune system won him (with Argentine-born immunologist César Milstein and German immunologist Georges J. Köhler) the 1984 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine.
