	Nigde
		It is the capital of the Nigde province with 350,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate).
		Nigde has traditionally been one of the cities controlling trade from southern Anatolia to the inner Anatolia and the Black Sea coast, by controlling the mountain pass between the Melendiz mountains in the west and the Taurus mountains in the east.
		Nigde is linked by rail and with the principal urban centres of Turkey; Adana 200 km south and Kayseri 150 km northeast.

		Nigde, the Nahita of Hittite times, lies in a valley flanked by volcanic peaks and commands the ancient trade route from Anatolia to the Mediterranean.
		Nigde's castle owes its present form to the Seljuks, and the elegant Alaeddin Mosque dates from the same period.
		From the 14th century era of Mongol rule are the Sungur Bey Mosque and the Hudavend Hatun Mausoleum, an excellent example of the Anatolian tower-tomb.

		Nigde is an old city on the southern outskirts of Cappadocia (map) with several exceptional historic buildings and, on its outskirts, a striking Byzantine troglodyte monastery.
		Among Nigde's historic buildings is the Seljuk Turkish Alaeddin Mosque (1223), on the hill with the fortress; the fascinating Süngür Bey Mosque, built by the Seljuks but extensively by the Mongols, of all people.
		Nigde's museum houses the mummified remains of a blonde Byzantine nun of the 900s discovered in the church-filled Ihlara Valley.

		Field work thus far has concentrated mostly on the Nigde massif (pronounced NEE-deh), a metamorphic core complex in south-central Turkey, but we are also studying the the P-T-t and structural evolution of the Kirsehir massif (just SW of Ankara; pronounced Kur-sheh-here) and the Akdag (pronounced AK-daah) massif (eastern part of the Central Anatolian crystalline complex).
		Whitney, D.L., and Dilek, Y. (1998) Metamorphism during crustal thickening and extension in central Anatolia: the Nigde metamorphic core complex.
		The Akdag massif consists of interlayered metacarbonate and metapelite (the white rock on the hillsides in the photo is marble), just like the Nigde and Kirsehir massifs, but it appears to have had a different P-T-t and structural history (we're working on it).
