  Nigel Bruce
William Nigel Bruce (September 4, 1895 - October 8, 1953), usually credited as Nigel Bruce, was a British character actor, best known as Dr. Watson in a series of films starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes.
Holmes purists objected that Watson in the books was an intelligent and capable person, just not a super detective, and that the Bruce portrayal made him seem dimmer and more bumbling than he was.
Bruce died in 1953, aged 57, in Santa Monica, California.

Nigel Bruce - Biography - Moviefone
Though a British subject through and through, actor Nigel Bruce was born in Mexico while his parents were on vacation there.
Nigel's first Hollywood picture was Springtime for Henry (1934), and soon he'd carved a niche for himself in roles as bumbling, befuddled middle-aged English gentlemen.
It was this quality which led Bruce to being cast as Sherlock Holmes' companion Dr. Watson in The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939), a pleasurable assignment in that the film's Holmes, Basil Rathbone, was one of Bruce's oldest and closest friends.

Nigel was around for about a month or so when the collection of his works was released.
The young lady who had expressed some interest in Nigel now noted she had a developed a suspicion that I was he but she wasn't completely sure.
A relatively new friend of mine took the collection of Nigel's work, which included two songs, picked up his guitar (which he played very well), and recorded one of the songs on his home equipment for me. I was well pleased, especially as it sounded quite good in its own way.

Rathbone and Bruce made 14 Holmes and Watson films; it's a real shame that four of the weakest are in the public domain and keep turning up while the rest are out of print.
