He was a son of High Court Judge Sir Cecil Havers and brother of Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss (born 1933) who in 1988 became the first woman named to the Court of Appeal and later President of the Family Division.
Michael Havers was named a Queen's Counsel in 1964 and became a member of the Privy Council in 1977.
His sons are the Honourable Philip Havers, QC and the actor, the Honourable Nigel Havers.

I also thought that Nigel Havers underplayed his part, almost as if his heart wasn't in what he was doing.
We thought it was very good, and all the cast including Nigel Havers were excellent, there was problem with lighting of stage and some of the stage was bare of scenery but overall, well done to the cast & thank you to the Mayflower.
Nigel Havers was good, but in trying to portray the part of a man troubled by the death of his wife lost the fierce intensity of the much loved book version portrayal of Maxim De Winter.
