Nigel Kennedy (born December 28, 1956), now often known simply as Kennedy, is an English violinist.
Kennedy has done much to popularise classical music, and is popular with young people.
Additionally, he has been keen to perform jazz on the violin, and in this respect he follows in the steps of Stephane Grappelli, though his style is very different.

With his Kennedy Experience octet, the chamber ensemble performs guitar-rock classics such as "Little Wing," "Fire," and, of course, "Purple Haze." These are extended jams--opener "Third Stone from the Sun" is 14 minutes long--but the playing is fine, with plenty of improvisation.
Nigel is careful to not "out Jimi" Hendrix by overextending his skills to the point of nauseam virtuosity, he carefully plots and exerts his own signature on the compositions as only he can.
All me fave Jimi tunes being set to the frantic urgency of Kennedy's flailing bow, and the accompanying musos bringing their brilliance into line with him, seems to work for me. Of course I was really anxious to see if he would colour between the lines, or would it stray.

This is an enjoyable album that continues to grow on me. The band assembled for Kennedy's jazz recording debut includes Joe Lovano, Jack DeJohnette and, on Hammond B-3, Lucky Peterson (who performed in Australia with the Dynamic Hepnotics).
Kennedy plays an electric violin with a broad, rather dark tone.
Kennedy does not threaten to dislodge my jazz violin favourites Ray Nance and Stuff Smith but he has something of his own and plays jazz much better, I am sure, than they would play Vivaldi.
