Night Mail   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-20)
Notes: 'The Midnight Hours' gained the nickname 'Night Mail 2' because many years ago it was screened on TV immediately after the original version, but separated by a commercial break.
Night Mail II was produced by TVS - TV South (formerly Southern Television) to celebrate 50 years since the original Night Mail was made (1936-1986).
Night Mail II maintained the momentum and pace of the original Night Mail with aerial shots of the North East TPO proudly sporting the new 'Royal Mail Letters' red and yellow livery with corporate typeface.

Guardian | Half night mail trains could have been saved
A Royal Mail spokeswoman said yesterday that Opcom's solution was impractical because EWS Railways, which runs Britain's mail trains, was not prepared to run only half the present level of trains.
Royal Mail's explanation was angrily denied by EWS, which said that over the course of a year's negotiation, it had provided a long list of alternative levels of rail service.
Royal Mail's withdrawal from the railways is in direct contradiction to the government's policy of luring freight away from Britain's congested road network and onto the more environmentally friendly railways.

With the Night Mail by Rudyard Kipling
Wells was the great imaginative force behind Scientific Romance from 1895 to at least the 1920s, but Rudyard Kipling was the most popular English language writer of his day, and it is not Wellsian but Kiplingesque storytelling and attitudes that dominated the Golden Age of SF and its descendents.
It is possibly the coincidence of World War II with Campbell's Golden Age (when many of the most influential stories of Robert A. Heinlein were first published), followed by the dreary Cold War, that has kept the link between hard science fiction and Kiplingesque military sf strong.

Guardian | End of the line for night mail
The "night mail" famously evoked by poet WH Auden is to disappear from the railways under a plan by Royal Mail to stop using trains to deliver letters, cards and packages.
The decision ends the 173-year tradition of mail on the railways, and is likely to dismay the government, which has a policy of cutting road pollution and congestion by shifting freight from trucks to trains.
Royal Mail's logistics director, Paul Bateson, said: "There is a marked difference between the price we believe we should be paying for rail services and that which was on the table.

Trivia: The sound recordists equipment was unable to record a realistic sound of the mail train clattering over the joints in the track during the "two bridges and 45 beats" trackside mailbag collection sequence.
It depicts a near-utopian world populated by chirpy proletarians working through the night to sort and deliver the mail.
Night Mail is largely remembered today because of Benjamin Britten's and WH Auden's collaboration on the film but their contribution is limited to a brief section at the end.

 Night Mail (1936)
Night Mail had modest origins: a film to explain to Post Office employees how the postal special travelling between London and Scotland worked.
Hugh MacDiarmid accepted an invitation from Grierson to write verse for the film but having heard Auden's contribution to Night Mail he was relieved it had apparently been found unsuitable.
Some of Auden's verbal images - the rounded Scottish hills 'heaped like slaughtered horses' were too strong for the film; but what was retained made Night Mail as much a film about loneliness and companionship as about the collection and delivery of letters.

At the end of the 20th century, the increase in night maintenance of track inevitably lead to delays in their running schedules was a contributory factor in their withdrawal in 2004 by the privatised Royal Mail.

In 1937, for the Boyd Neel String Orch.'s concert at the Salzburg Fest., he wrote the Variations on a Theme by Frank Bridge.
These themes found their most impressive outlet in the operas Billy Budd, The Turn of the Screw, and Owen Wingrave, the two last being adaptations by Myfanwy Piper of Henry James.
If these, and such works as the great War Requiem, represent the dark side of his musical personality, the 1953 Coronation opera Gloriana (a failure at first), his splendid Midsummer Night's Dream, the comedy Albert Herring, and a host of choral and instrumental works such as the pf.

"With the Night Mail" by Rudyard Kipling
This Kipling story idealizes ship captains and crews, military discipline, and civil service all at once: an hierarchal, paramilitary air postal service controls communications and rules the world of the future, for the benefit of all.
The story was so popular, in the day of the competition between the airplane and the airship for the future of the air, that Kipling also wrote a sequel, "As Easy as A. C." in 1912; "With the Night Mail" was also reprinted and published alone in an illustrated hardcover volume in the 1920s.
