In the 1930s, at the age of twenty-nine, Emlyn Williams wrote the part of the psychologically disturbed Danny in 'Night Must Fall' for himself because he was dissatisfied with the roles he was being asked to perform.
Night Must Fall was finished in February 1935 and the first performance took place two months later.
A tour of three cities was followed by a première in London at the Duchess Theatre in May (with Williams himself as Danny and May Whitty as Mrs Bramson), the play running for over eighteen months and then for eight weeks on Broadway.

A remarkable and in my opinion praiseworthy feature of the case has been that the sanity of the prisoner has never been called into question; and, like the learned judge, the Court must dismiss as mischievous pretence the attitude of this young man who stands convicted of two brutal murders in cold blood.
This case has, from beginning to end, exhibited no feature calling for sympathy; the evidence has on every point been conclusive, and on this evidence the jury have convicted the appellant.
In the opinion of the Court there is no reason to interfere with that conviction, and this appeal must be dismissed.
