Night Shift Book at Shop Ireland
Night Shift, which was first published in 1976, is the first of King's short story collections, bringing together twenty stories originally published in such disparate magazines as Cavalier, Penthouse, and Cosmopolitan (yes, Cosmopolitan) in the early to mid 1970s.
The book opens with Jerusalem's Lot, a thoroughly Lovecraftian exploration of the early history of this infamous little hamlet; told in the form of letters and steeped in Mythos lore, it is the type of tale that could have been written by a member of the original Lovecraft Circle.
I finally decided that I wanted to read one of his books and this was the one I picked because I figured it would be best to start with a collection of short stories rather than a novel.

The Hand of Glory is also mentioned in the short story "The Mangler", in the book Night Shift, by Stephen King.
A Hand of Glory is created and used by the evil sorceress Selenna Izard in John Bellairs' children's book "The House With a Clock in Its Walls".
The book is found in the library of dreams which contains many books (some by popular authors such as JRR Tolkien) that were only imagined by their authors and never written.

Kev's Stephen King House of Night Shift
I read my first Night Shift stories when I was twelve, at the cusp of reading as an adult.
As with the rest of Night Shift, this story has stong thematic ties with King's longer work, specifically "The Body" and It in its motif of the how the loss of a sibling impacts one's own life.
The only story in Night Shift from a primarily female point of view, this subtle tale explores one of King's favorite themes: young adults given power beyond their comprehension.

The static voices from a radio station sizzle on the night waves, bad news that no one listens to: a situation in a small Asian country that would bear watching, an unidentified woman pulled from the East River, the Russians had exploded a nuclear device, a hammer-wielding serial killer on the loose.

The book is a mix of theory and clinical examples, interspersed with asides on the architecture of the nervous system (similar to Luria's "The Man With a Shattered World").
In this wondrously engaging book, Damasio takes the reader on a journey of scientific discovery through a series of case studies, demonstrating what many of us have long suspected: emotions are not a luxury, they are essential to rational thinking and to normal social behavior.
I strongly suspect that the publishers insisted on the title of this book over the objections of the authors, because (as another reviewer has noted) the title is clearly sensationalistic and very much out of line with the even-handed and level-headed treatment of the rest of the book.

Loss of Inner Calendrical Rhythm, as years of nights and weekends (unlike the rest of the world) erase your sense of day, date, and lifestyle, or ultimately the ability to function happily in a daytime world in the manner of the old phrase "I've been upside-down so long ---it seems like right-side up to me!"
It's easy, when lifestyle consists of long night shifts and revolves around essential functions of work, sleep, and eating, to omit keeping the body in tune.
If you seek career-advancement and consistently work nights, you will have to find useful ways to overcome the "invisibility" of not being frequently seen by administrators and committees.
