Dark Shadows was proving a massive hit in the daytime ratings, enough for producer Dan Curtis to begin actively pursuing the possibility of translating the format to the big screen.
The Curse of Dark Shadows, later re-titled Night of Dark Shadows for its release.
Night of Dark Shadows was pre-booked to open in theatres in New England in little over a week, leaving no time to evaluate a proper reconstruction of the story for a shorter running time.

  The Harrow: Review: Dark Shadows
Dark Shadows' chief writer, Art Wallace, whose previous works included the original teleplay This House (NBC's Goodyear TV Playhouse, 1957), was approached by Curtis to write and develop the story outline for the proposed series, which was to originally be named Shadows On The Wall.
Wallace drew heavily from This House in the beginning development of Dark Shadows, and with all due respect, what initially began as a gothic romantic serial that couldn't quite grow wings, the turn to elements of horror and suspense was genius.
Dark Shadows slithered back to life briefly in 1991 with a completely new cast and writers who arrogated plot elements from the original series.

These groups were directly instrumental in getting Dark Shadows re-run in syndication on local stations (often public broadcasting stations), throughout the 1970s and 1980s and in persuading series creator Dan Curtis to remake the show as a prime-time weekly drama on NBC-TV in 1991.
The popularity of Dark Shadows must be set against the counter-cultural movements of the late 1960s: interest in alternative religions, altered states of consciousness, and paranormal phenomena such as witchcraft.
Dark Shadows regularly explored those areas through its sympathetic supernatural creatures, while most of the true villains of the piece turned out to be stern patriarchs and hypocritical preachers.

 House of Dark Shadows
When its six-year run ground to a halt in 1971, I was not yet born, and “Dark Shadows” has never (at least in my TV market) been one of those shows that succeeds in crossing over into the eternal unlife of syndication— although it certainly would have been most appropriate if it had.
The closest I ever came to a brush with the original “Dark Shadows” was at the turn of the 1990’s, when the show was briefly resurrected with a new cast and a new creative team.
This is all the more puzzling because House of Dark Shadows— in contrast to Transformers: The Movie— does not appear to fit into the TV continuity at any specified point, but seems rather to stand as a sort of edited highlights reel for the first five years of the series.

For some reason this stretch of Dark Shadows really took it hard when aging, and kinescope copies are required to assemble episodes 296, 300, 318, 320, 330, and 325 (which means these are seen in inferior fl and white—which I always argued added some mood to the show).
Dark Shadows: DVD Collection Three sets up the genesis of an arc that would last throughout the rest of the run—their relationship which develops as patient, friend, and eventually more by the conclusion.

Most likely it refers to continuity with House of Dark Shadows; Elizabeth was the only adult member of the family left alive, and it would make sense that the house would pass on to Quentin after her death.

from DVD Drive-In NIGHT OF DARK SHADOWS has a bad reputation because of its plotline that strays from the vampire theme and because it is somewhat confusing.

The overall Gothic feel of the movie is more prevalent than its predecessor, HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS, and this movie actually is more in-depth and psychological in its plotline.
