Night of the Living Dead (1990) - Black Horror Movies.com tony todd zombie remake
Horror remakes are all the rage these days, so in some ways, the 1990 Night of the Living Dead "redux" was ahead of its time.
The biggest difference between the 1990 version and the original is the shift in emphasis from Ben (Tony "Candyman" Todd) to Barbara (Patricia "no relation to Phantasm's" Tallman).
In 1990, it's not so radical a sight (although still rare), but the fact that the previously mousy, near catatonic Barbara is now the sole survivor and that Ben's originally ironic (and racially intimated) death is done away with, is significant.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: Night of the Living Dead | Deseret Morning News Web edition
"Night of the Living Dead" is playing at the Redwood Drive-in with "Lord of the Flies," and considering that both are unnecessary play-by-play remakes, it's hard to imagine a more appropriate co-feature.
Back in 1968, George A. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" was a shoestring fl-and-white production that shocked audiences and changed the face of horror films, opening the door for more explicit violence in mainstream movies.
Yet despite a few admittedly hokey moments, Romero's film still packs a powerful punch in its tale of the dead rising from their graves to feed on the living, focusing primarily on a few panicky individuals who barricade themselves in a small farmhouse.

There is a moment early on in George Romero’s remake of his own 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead where I knew immediately where he and director Tom Savini were taking us with their commentary on society.
In that context, this Night of the Living Dead is certainly laughable—its characters are routine and exaggerated, and the events are pretty much as they happened in the original version.
A sequel to Day of the Dead, tentatively titled Land of the Dead, is also in the works, which is will feature a society apathetic to the living dead.

In this version of Romero's cult 1968 shocker, Barbara is no longer a whimpering wreak who is unable to protect herself, she is now a strong and independent woman of the 90's while Ben has become somewhat of an unstable case who while being strong, is emotionally on the edge and barely able to cope.

It’s a new night for terror … and a new dawn in horror movie-making when special-effects genius Tom Savini (creator of the spectacularly gruesome make-up in Friday The 13th and Creepshow) brings modern technology to this colorful remake of George A. Romero’s 1968 cult classic.

In the previous version of NOTLD Barbara spent most of the film in a catatonic state, which is understandable, as she had just seen her brother attacked and killed by a zombie.

Cold Fusion Video Reviews: Night of the Living Dead
In its outlines, the 1990 version follows closely in the footsteps of the original.
All of those rough edges work in the movie's favor: The primitive camera work harks back to cinema verite, the close quarters and stark lighting add claustrophobia to almost every scene, and the living dead are frightening simply by virtue of their being dead, not dead and creatively ugly.
There may be out there a critic who can approach this movie fresh, without a knowledge of the original, who may be able to assess its successes against the body of cinema at large instead of specifically against one of the greatest horror movies ever made.

The result is passable, but the very fact that the original was made 22 years before makes this version seem almost dated in its restraint.
By the time of its release, Romero had already geometrically raised the gore quotient with Dawn of the Dead (1978) and Day of the Dead (1985), so Savini's starting back at square one further lessened the impact of this pointless retread.
If this version has anything to offer, it is Patricia Tallman's engaging lead performance as a gun-toting independent woman, one of this film's few elements not lifted wholesale from Romero.
