It is touted as the first gay-themed narrative film with a "positive" outlook - in that no one is ashamed of being gay and no one dies in the end for being so.
I will grant it that, but the life (however accurate) of a seeker of love and relationship in a world only interested in casual sex is, in the end, a negative look at a negative world.
The film is cast with competent, though almost universally plain, actors.

Edward Hopper and Film Noir   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Film Noir is known for a strong, characteristic visual style.
Though much of Noir film was set in the city, some scenes were set in the country (in some cases, entire films, such as Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt in 1943).
Though classic Noir films were shot in fl and white, there is a tonal similarity between Office at Night and Noir films - a dreary, depressed world that tends to look on the darker side of things.

DVD Talk > Reviews > Nighthawks
Nighthawks (1981), one of the films from this uncertain time in the Italian Stallion's career, may not be the best work he's ever done, but considering the overwhelming crap he's appeared in over the years, it ranks in the upper tier of Stallone's pantheon.
Still, the film is a decent thriller, with enough tension to keep the plot moving along, and enough decent acting to keep it from sinking into the mire of B-movie filmmaking, where it very well may have originated.
The release of Nighthawks on DVD is nothing more than an example of Universal going through their film library looking for titles that can be sold with a modicum of ease to the public.

In the past, when AMC showed silent films at all, they were either programmed in the middle of the night, or were buried in the riches of their annual film preservation festival/fund raising marathon.
The original film was released on laserdisc by Lumivision and on homevideo by Milestone in a deluxe package that included the longest surviving version of the film, trailers and several short films.
Two high-profile Paramount films did not appear at all, a number of films listed as "no further information on this film could be found" were in existence and readily available, the listing of songs for the musical films was often incomplete, one film appeared out of alphabetical sequence, and there were little factual errors.

Nighthawks is also about Jim’s attempt at trying sustain his belief in his work as a teacher.
The film’s most interesting sequence is an apparently improvisational discussion with the rowdy teens in his geography class when they find out he’s gay, too which he freely admits.
The film’s ending is equally impressive, Jim and a friend have just left an art gallery and headed for a club filled with men dancing to a monotonously grinding disco beat.

 Stomp Tokyo Review - Nighthawks
It would be easy to miss Nighthawks on the shelf of your local Mom and Pop video store; the cover doesn't do much to distinguish it from any other early 80's cop film, especially since Sylvester Stallone's face is hidden behind a beard for the entire movie.
All of this leads to a final climactic scene in which an old action-film convention is resurrected: a skill displayed by our hero at the beginning of the film comes in handy at the end of the film.

Observer | From Nighthawks to the shadows of film noir
According to his biographer, Gail Levin, he was inspired to paint his most famous picture, Nighthawks (1942), after reading Ernest Hemingway's story The Killers, in which two hitmen arrive at a small-town diner to murder a burnt-out prizefighter for some undisclosed offence.
The film used two typical Hopper loci for the ex-boxer's squalid lodging and humble workplace, ie the dark room in a hotel or boarding house where a single person broods, and the desolate roadside filling station as in Gas and Four Lane Road.
Hopper's greatest contribution to film noir was his way of rendering in colour those dark shadows, that contrast between light and dark.

Being the first major gay film to come from the UK it was understandably met with some criticism as it didn’t fulfil everyone’s expectations as to what it should encompass or represent.
Indeed, it is now a film which stands out for its honesty and the way in which it reflects the society of its time.

Overall, Nighthawks is a film that even today stands up better than most cop thrillers that rely on the couple of days to retirement and the new partner cliche.
Nighthawks was released a few years ago by Goodtimes full frame and the picture quality was decent and clear but with it's share of grain and specks throughout.
Recently, Universal cleaned up most of it in an anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen transfer (the first time in any medium for this film) and the results are better but not a drastic improvement as fls still show a hint of grain and specks but they're put to a minimum and are evident.

The conclusion of this futile search should have been that it doesn't matter what "Nighthawks" the movie is like, because "Nighthawks" the rap album has to stand on its own.
It should be noted, however, that, far from being a cinematographic masterpiece, "Nighthawks" the movie seems to contain at least some of the bugs typical for the genre.
From a hip-hop perspective however, considering everything from beats and rhymes to the actual content, "Nighthawks" the album is firmly planted in the hip-hop universe.

He easily holds the attention of the audience throughout the film, and is very much believable as a deadly terrorist, proving to be a very satisfying villain who doesn't have to go over the top to be a presence on screen.
Hauer's true "presence", however, is disguised for the early scenes of the film; that's neither his real nose nor his real jawline, though he looks perfectly natural at the time.
Finally, though it may be difficult to notice at first with a full head of hair, Persis Khambatta (Megaforce), who plays Wulfgar's compatriot, Shakka, would probably be most recognizable to audiences were she sporting a bald head, as she did as Lt. Ilia in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

When it was released in 1979, "Nighthawks," directed by Ron Peck and Paul Hallam, was a progenitor of the many, many coming-out tales that have been made by young gay directors in the time since.
Almost twenty years on, there's still strength in his story of Jim, a closeted man (Ken Robertson) who goes about a mundane workaday life as a London schoolteacher, but haunts gay bars and discos by night.
It is a question with graver implications than when "Nighthawks" was first released.

Nighthawks (a rather nonsensical title) concerns international terrorist Wulfar (Rutger Hauer's American film debut), now persona non grata among major terrorist networks after an overdone IRA-commissioned bombing in London, fleeing to New York in order to garner maximum publicity and sell himself back to major terrorist organizations.

Artist Edward Hopper's famous 1942 painting “Nighthawks” has a mesmerizing quality to it--an all-night diner illuminating the dark New York night with its fluorescent glow.
Simple and stark, the painting evokes a big-city loneliness that makes you curious about those lost souls who wandered in for a jolt of java and a bit of late-night conversation.
Playwright Evan Guilford-Blake took that curiosity and wrote a one-act play, Nighthawks, that imagines the moment that drew these four unlikely people together--who they were, where they came from and why they ended up at the counter together.
