Pet Shop Boys - Nightlife | Album Review @ Music-Critic.com : the source for music reviews, interviews, articles, and ...
After one listen to Pet Shop Boys new release Nightlife (love those one-word titles), I decided right away that this wasn't only their best album yet, but was also the best album this year by far.
For those who remember how weighty the subject matter and feel of their most critically acclaimed album to date, 1990's Behavior was, Nightlife will be seen as a welcome change.
The two albums, appropriately enough, could actually be bookends for the decade of the 90's itself.

Pet Shop Boys : Nightlife - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Nightlife is a loose concept album -- more of a song cycle, really -- about nightlife (naturally), a collection of moods and themes, from love to loneliness.
In that sense, it's not that different from most Pet Shop Boys albums, and, musically, the album is very much of a piece with Very and Bilingual, which is to say that it relies more on craft than on innovation.
Repeated listens reveal the songs' charms, yet Nightlife coasts on its craft a bit too much, which makes it feel like one of their second-tier albums.

 Nightlife, Release, and Disco 3
The first single from Nightlife (at least in Britain; in the U.S., it was the second single, following "New York City Boy") is another in the Boys' tradition of inordinately long song titles, and it's a textbook study in their patented style of blending dance beats, grand orchestral flourishes, and somewhat depressing lyrics.
A major goal of this album was to create, in Chris's words, "a Neil and Chris record"—a rather "personal" collection that focuses on "story songs," with greater emphasis on lyrics than on Nightlife, strong melodies, and simpler arrangements that demonstrate the Boys' skills as musicians.
The album's title, which was provided by Wolfgang Tillmans (the creator of the video for "Home and Dry"), is a multiple-entendre, suggesting emotional release, sexual release, the springtime release of pollen by flowers, and of course the release of a new recording.

Jeff Golub Website - NIGHTLIFE PR
Musically, Golub's concept for Nightlife was to strike a balance between soulful seduction and a down home blues-rock feel, all the while keeping in mind the powerful improvisational spirit of jazz.
Nightlife kicks off with the thick hip hop grooves and classic soul horn feel of the funky title track before easing into the shuffling ballad mode on the haunting "Bobby's Mood," a tribute to Golub's late friend, former Billy Squier drummer Bobby Chouinard.
On Nightlife, Golub comes full circle, finding a happy medium between all of the many inspirations of his life.

 [No title]
Nightlife, the much anticipated release from Pet Shop Boys since their 1996 release Bilingual, has indeed met the mark of a great dance album.
This piece is probably the most intense on the album, and Craig Armstrong's work with the orchestra and choir add the nuances this song needs to succeed.
Neil's voice is almost covered by the addition of the background vocalists; as the track moves on, however, the volume improves and the piece ends on a soft note.

The Seattle Times: Music & nightlife: Album art is visual history of recorded music
The first album featuring art ("Smash Song Hits by Rodgers and Hart") was a huge success, changing the future of music-marketing.
But album art doesn't have to be complicated, funny or shocking to be memorable.
But without the marketing budget of a big label, independent acts have to shell out their own money for album art — which can be expensive.

CD Baby: BLUE PERIOD: Nightlife Casualties
Both a celebration and an indictment of nightclub culture, Nightlife Casualties is a sonic bar crawl from the trendiest hot spots to the darkest dives.
More importantly, this album is FUN with enough pop sense to be catchy, yet heavy enough to be an all out, kick-ass glitz RAWK album.
Even still, there's more to "Nightlife Casualties" than meets the eye, for beneath the fun and glamour of it all lies a sense of depth and complexity.

"Nightlife" also trumpets a rebirth of sorts for Cobra Verde, whose previous albums have been lauded in publications such as Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly.
The group brought a tougher edge to Pollard's brand of pop, but the personalities didn't mesh and the association ended after the tour to support the album.
Bassist Dave Swanson left the group before "Nightlife" was released, and multi-instrumentalist Don Depew decided he didn't want to tour anymore.

Salon Music | The last days of disco   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Musically, "Nightlife" seems to be taking off from "Saturday Night Forever," a piece of classic disco that closed the Pets' last album, "Bilingual" (1996).
The title "Nightlife" implies time out with drinks, laughs, friends; but the mood of the album is much more akin to the bookends of those good times -- the expectation of getting ready to go out (almost always better than the real thing) and the letdown of coming in afterwards.
They have said that, since "Nightlife" is a less personal album (ha!), they decided to adopt a "professional" look.

The Harvard Crimson :: Arts :: Album Review: Nightlife by Pet Shop Boys
In Nightlife, their first studio album since 1996's Bilingual, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe stick to their forte.
True to its title, Nightlife sees the boys step up a notch from their traditional synth-pop to out-and-out dance music, opening with the one-two punch of "For Your Own Good" and "Closer to Heaven," both of which adopt the sharp high hats and deep basslines of trance music.
Still, the album loves the nightlife, and "New York City Boy" (another Morales track) is a camp anthem to behold.

After the disappointment of just abour every album that came out after "Very" I was not particularly thrilled about "Nightlife" coming out, fearing another disappointment and feeling that perhaps indeed, nothing lasts forever and the Boys' have lost their touch.
But for the most part the album is a delight and there are some real gems rivaling the brilliance of Behavior and Very (my two other favorites).
This album, backed up by their first tour to include USA dates in half a decade, is sharp, clean, fun, witty, poppy, dance-filled -- all the things the PSB are known and loved for.

 Closer to Heaven
Mutual commitments (albums and tours for PSB; plays and TV scripts for Harvey) delayed the start of actual work on their musical until 1997.
Soon that title was abandoned (though of course the Boys took it for their 1999 album), with the trio eventually settling on Closer to Heaven.
Several prospective songs for the musical, including its title song, made their debut on the Nightlife album, while others surfaced in concerts and/or demos that circulated on the Internet.

Overall, the album is playful and infectiously catchy, while maintaining its unique arty flair and great sense of humor.

Eye Weekly - Englishmen in New York - 11.04.99
Despite a relationship with dance music that's existed since Tennant and partner Chris Lowe recorded the original version of "West End Girls" with New York producer Bobby O in the early '80s, the Pet Shop Boys are still regarded with suspicion by the club cognoscenti for being first and foremost a pop group...
But with Nightlife, their best album since 1990's Behaviour, they find a balance of their own style -- distinguished by Tennant's keening vocals, a classical approach to melody and a withering wit -- and that of their renowned collaborators.
But a disproportionate number of Tennant's characters are not out clubbing but stuck at home, waiting for their lovers to return or for their lives to begin.
