Topic: Nightshade (PlayStation 2)

Nightshade: Playstation 2 (PS2) Reviews - The Armchair Empire
When Shinobi was released on the PS2 last year it was embraced by a number of hardcore gamers for the title’s high level of difficulty, a noticeable departure from many of its contemporaries that were cakewalks by comparison.
While this may partially alienate fans of Nightshade’s predecessor, it does allow the game to be a far more accessible title that more casual gamers will greatly enjoy, as the this title is far less intimidating in terms of challenge.
The instant kill combo phenomenon is still present through Nightshade, but by the time you reach the high levels, the required high-flying aerial combos, and strategically defeating enemies for maximum effect will give gamers seeking a challenge enough to enjoy.

Nightshade Preview - PlayStation 2 News at GameSpot
Nightshade is developer Overworks' follow-up to last year's Shinobi, which updated the classic Sega franchise on the PlayStation 2.
Nightshade, formerly known by the same moniker as its Japanese counterpart--Kunoichi--takes place one year after Shinobi and focuses on she-ninja extraordinaire Hibana.
When the development of Nightshade began, they reexamined many aspects of their approach and opted to implement some changes to provide a better overall experience that would be challenging but not as brutal as some of the latter sequences in Shinobi (Hello, moth boss!).

 WORTHPLAYING - - All about games !
Instead, the themes of Nightshade are betrayal and depression, as Hibana works out her serious father issues via the therapeutic murder of every hellspawned demon or cannon-fodder ninja within the Tokyo city limits.
Nightshade isn’t quite as unforgiving as its predecessor, because you no longer wield a sword that’ll turn on you if you go for too long without murdering someone.
Essentially, the biggest problem Nightshade has is that it has some of the fastest-paced, most fun gameplay you can find on store shelves these days, and offers more of a sense of accomplishment by beating and mastering it than most games ever think of having, but it torpedoes itself in the end.

 PS2 Game Reviews: Nightshade
Nightshade follows the adventures of Hibana, a Ninja for hire, who has been retained by the Tokyo government to defeat hordes of Hellspawn newly awakened by the ancient Akujiki curse.
Hibana must defeat all of her enemies, and collect all the pieces of the Akujiki sword, which was the sword from Shinobi that sucks the souls of those that it comes into with.
Nightshade’s combat is fast, and is made even faster by the use of the “TATE” attack.

Nightshade has that retro action feel that seems to have been lost in games of late.
Nightshade is one of those games that focuses this odd thing that games no longer seem to have much of.
Nightshade's graphics engine somehow manages to keep up with the amazing speed of dashing, cutting and jumping that Hibana never gets a break from.

Dying and retrying is a part of the game, though technical issues are rarely the culprit thanks to tight, responsive controls and a reliable camera system.
Nightshade will ultimately separate its fanbase from its detractors based upon one’s mastery of this concept, and how much satisfaction they derive from this challenge.
On the brighter side, Nightshade contains all of the bells and chimes of a classic arcade title, and while they give the game a distinctly retro sound, the quality of the effects themselves are no less than what you would expect from a next generation offering.

One area where Nightshade's really improved is the level design, which is far more intricate and interesting than it was in Shinobi.
Where Shinobi was a rather dark and gloomy game, Nightshade isn't afraid to throw some vibrant colors onscreen once in a while.
Nightshade does a good job of fixing up some of the more annoying bits of its forebear and making a game that is a bit more enjoyable for casual play.

Gaming Target - PlayStation 2: Nightshade - Review
Nightshade puts you in control of Hibana, a kunoichi (female ninja, and the Japanese title for the game, Nightshade adopted here because it obviously sounded cooler) out to stop evil demons from terrorizing a neo-Tokyo-like place and also find the parts of the akujiki, some evil sword thing.
Nightshade is a futuristic take on ninja action, though apparently the future looks a little on the bland side.
Unfortunately, hammy, bored voice acting really brings Nightshade down a bit here, as everyone sounds either like they had no voice acting classes or are bored to tears with this lame-ass storyline of the game.

Since the character in the background is the first character for "ninja", just like it is in Shinobi, and the game has a heroine, it should probably be entitled “Kunoichi,” but they called the game Nightshade instead.

The big difference with Tate sequences in Nightshade and Shinobi is that they are now easier to obtain.

When I got my hands on Nightshade, I was expecting an arcade-like action-fest like its predecessor, Shinobi.
However, this time around quite a few things were changed, and not necessarily for the better.
At the end of the day, Nightshade's levels are too bland, the enemies are too dumb, and the characters are too flat for it to even have a chance to stand up to Shinobi.

 Review - Nightshade // PlayStation 2 /// Eurogamer
While there are certainly a small minority of people who enjoyed the mechanics of the game, we found the gameplay to be repetitive and hackneyed, the presentation to be poor and ultimately, the whole experience was tedious, frustrating and unrewarding - not exactly a compelling package in a videogame.
When we first heard about Nightshade, with its shuriken-chucking heroine in her skin-tight ninja gear, it sounded like exactly what the doctor ordered.
Sadly, to describe Nightshade's graphics as underwhelming would be like describing the Atlantic as a bit wet; there has been absolutely no evolution here since the atrocious looking Shinobi, and the outdoor sections only serve to exacerbate the problem, with enemies popping into view en masse only a few feet away from you.

Suddenly, hordes of demons invaded the city of Tokyo, sending the Government into a state of desperation and panic; they contacted the Shinobi Agency and, after a display of her skills, decided to hire Hibana — she was Tokyo’s only hope.
Nightshade, Sega’s follow-up to Shinobi on PlayStation 2, attempts to create a futuristic ninja feel, utilising common shapes and elements of the tech-world such as hexagons, squared-off triangles and scrolling data screens for the menus and heads-up display.
Nightshade essentially belongs to the action-adventure genre, but instead of concentrating on exploration and puzzles, it’ll concentrate much more heavily on the fighting aspect.
