Nihombashi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Nihombashi district was a major mercantile center during the Edo period: its early development is largely credited to the Mitsui family, who based their wholesaling business in Nihombashi and developed Japan's first department store, Mitsukoshi, there.
Nihombashi is located east of Tokyo Station, north of Yaesu and Ginza, south of Akihabara, and west of the Sumida River.
Nihombashi first became famous during the 1600s, when it was the eastern terminus of the Tokaido road between Edo and Kyoto.

 Travel Guide -- Destination Guides - Asia - Japan - Tokyo - Central ...
On the northern fringes of central Tokyo, Nihombashi (Bridge of Japan) grew from a cluster of riverside markets in the early seventeenth century to become the city's chief financial district.
Since 1603, the centre of Nihombashi, and effectively of all Japan, was an arched bridge - a favourite of ukiyo-e artists - which marked the start of the Tokaido, the great road running between Edo and Kyoto.
The original wooden bridge has long gone, but distances from Tokyo are still measured from a bronze marker at the halfway point of the present double-span of stone.
